I think you have to open the heater core housing, but I can't remember it has been a while. Somewhere under the dash, built into the air ducting is a type of small door that is opened and closed by the switch that selects where the air comes out. Make sure the wire or cable is connected to the switch and then check the other end. That's the best advice I can give you without going and taking things apart.
next thing i would advise is, a good possibility of a vaccum leak, trace your engine bay lines and verify that they are not weathered, heated and cracked or broken, and then check the diaphrams, and vaccum lines that go to the heater controls also. (the BEST way to see if you have a vaccum leak, the easiest, ether, or some kind of flammable starter solution in a can, spray it CONSERVATIVELY around vaccum lines, if you get a jump in rpm, you got a vaccum leak.

I know on mine I had to get the fan motor replaced and I made sure that the pipes were cleaned out, Also like what was said check your housing to see if u have any links... That will be the only way that you will really be able to know.
Violet vacuum tube is the source from the engine,
Red is Heater/Defrost mode, Yellow is the vent mode.
Red and Yellow are connected either side of a double acting vacuum valve---you may have lost vacuum to the Red tube and the system has defaulted to VENT.
The valve could also be faulty/jammed?
