94 Sunbird Hard to shift??
Thursday, February 15, 2007 11:19 PM
I have a 94 Sunbird 3.1L and when its running its hard to shift in all gears. It just started today and when i put it in reverse it jumps into reverse loud noise.

But with the car off, and using clutch it goes into gear fine. what could be wrong?

sounds like a clutch hydralic issue. either the slave cyl or master cyl is leaking.

Check the transmission fluid/ gear oil.. you didn't specify auto or manual. If it's manual, check the clutch master cylinder on the firewall to make sure it has enough fluid. Let us know if it's auto or stick.

Well, then just check to make sure there is enough gear oil in the trans. If you don't know where the tiny dipstick is, it's on the driver's side back of the trans. Use a flashlight. If it has the correct amount of oil, check the clutch master cylinder to make sure it has enough fluid in it, there is a hole around the edge of the plastic that you fill up to.

you have a leak on either the master slave or the line going between them, crawl under the dash pull the carpet back and see if you can see fluid back there. then move to the otherside of the firewall and see if you can feel/see fluid there, then work your way down the line to the slave and see if you can see fluid there as well....

hope that helps ya a lil

Ok i just filled it with GM syncromesh and at times its fine then 5 mins later it stiff again. Could something be freezing? Bottom of the car was covered in snow and i washed it underneath.

I took the car for a drive and once it gets warmer from driving it a while it gets harder and harder to put into gear.
