Engine swap

just curious if the 92 or 93 2.2 with a 5sp out of a cavalier will go into a sunbird 94 with a 2.0 OHC with 5sp with ease or not i figoure i need engine/wire harness/ecm but not sure if ill need the tranny or not? any answers if i have to swap that out to or can i just pull both engines and put the 2.2 on the 2.0s tranny? if not will i need to swap drivelines EX: axles and other driveline parts off the donor car any info where i could find a HOW to or anything like that would be great thanks

and when i get this swap done and my sunbird is running and driving if anyone wants a 2.0 OHC with a bad head :bent valves: im guessing i didnt catch i set timing wrong when i did head gasket now it wont time period and i can turn the crank by hand and depending which tranny i have to use ill have a 5sp for sale all these parts are in SD and i have a 4door cavy to part out less drivers fender since its dented but doors and pass fender and other stuff is still good just leave me a message here im in the process of getting my email acct back in my name after someone got on and changed my PW

Why swap in a 2.2 from a 2.0? Worthless, IMO....spend a little bit more and swap in a 3.1 or 3400...more power, looks better....

because i got the cavy with 2.2 for free from someone a buddy of mine sold some tools to at sears lol so ied wrather spend little or nothing and put then 2.2 in than spend money i dont have cause my 04 dodge ram 1500 i drive now drinks the rest of my money in gas lol

so i need to know what all i have to do to put the 2.2 5sp in my sunbird that currently has a 2.0 OHC 5sp with bent valves im not looking for power gains i mean im a dodge fan but i do like the looks of chevys and pontiacs j bodys i might in the future when i start saving from driving the SB do some stuff to it. no way in hell rice it out but lil things here and there and maybe in a year or so swap in a 3100 or 3400 probaly a 3400 more bang for the buck but right now the most i ever see in my account is well the 5 dollars i have to keep in it to keep the account open lol

so if this will work by just swapping engines ecms wiring harnesses i need to know or if i also have to swap the trannys to and axles ect ive never swapped in a different motor so i dont know what all i realy need so information on that would be helpful thanks

the enigine bays are indentical, the motor and trans will bolt right in without issues. you will need to sweap the motor, trans, ecm, wiring harness and possibly the rad. if you have a complete donor car, you will have everything you need, just tear into it.

You should not have bent the valves on the 2.0 ohc since it is a non interference engine.

sell the cav with the 2.2 and buy what you need for a 3x00 swap...

The trannys are diffrent, use the cavy axels just to be safe, the sunbird ones will probly work but just to be sure use the ones that came with it cause then your positive, strip the wiring out of the engine bay, just unplug it at the firewall on both sides, the driver side plug is two halfs, the left half is for the motor unplug it and get rid of it, the right half is for the headlights and such... plug that back in, the passenger side the hole plug comes out, then you have the difficult part of standing on your head to remove the harness from the fire wall to ECM on the inside of the car behind the dash, that little bit of harness needs to come from a 2.2 as well, and then obvioulsy the ecm.

Make sure the 2.0 is dead tho first, I'd hate to see you do all that work when all you had to do was set your timing properly, before you do anything pull the timing covers and crank pulley off and check the timing. on the crank there is a little groove in the pulley that should line up with the groove in the bottom of the cover, then the cam has a slot in it at on end that should line up with the notch in the top of the cover.

You do need to swap the radiator.

well i had the car start once and it idled bad with what i had set timeing and i did what u said set the grooves to the marks but when i crank the motor the crank groove will line back up but the came gear will be upside down instead of being up towards hood it is facing down towards ground but i had set them both the right way so what am i doing wrong lol i can turn the crank by hand but before i redid the headgasket the car ran fine but smoked and idled rough dude to bad headgasket and the oring in the FPR was gone and leaking gas out the return line fixed all that but it started once but not again i just get fireballs out the exaust ports

maybe i have the coil pack wrong??

ok its under the intake so hows it set up?

if u look at it the coil plugs start towards firewall heading towards front of motor which plug goes to which cylinder?

They are numbered, you just have to get it cleaned up enough to see the #'s, and have a flashlight.

I'll start reading this thread again when you start using punctuation and capitalization. My head hurts.

Right there you can see that you should read more before even thinking about a swap. Of course the cam gear will not line up if you do only 1 turn. the cam turn once for every 2 crank rotation.

i know im an idiot when it comes to setting things best thing im good at is taking stuff off putting it back on.. but ive got the 2.0 out and the 2.2 in all thats left is shifter cables/battery/radiator/clutch cylinder "need to find" old broke into peices when coming off the cavalier/throttle cable/k members bolted in/new oil pan/and some new power steering hoses. then hopefully i can get the bills of sale from the kid i bought it from haha got the title tho but no BOS and lil bast keeps iluding my calls and shell be on the road for another couple hundred thousand i hope the 2.0 had 242,943 miles the 2.2 had 70,000 on rebuild and 15000 on a headgasket and planeing of the head so pretty good shape
