03 ls sport 4 door road noise
Tuesday, January 17, 2006 11:17 PM
Ok like I said I have an 03 ls sport 4 door with 0 mods other than audio and I have noticed the noise is worse than any other car I have ever ridden in. It isn't even the wind noise that really bothers me because that isn't that bad. It is like you can hear the road a lot more than you can in other cars. Like every groove on the road shoots up through the suspension and directly reverberates in my ears. Any way to take care of this? Is it the tires that come with the ls sports? Is it the suspension itself?

Skyler I know what you mean. My '03 cav rides like shat. And it is all stock suspension. It is bouncy and yes you can feel every single bump in the road. It rides like it has blown struts on lowering springs. But it is all stock. Hopefully this spring when I put in the Yellows and GC's it will ride better...............If I hear anything I will update.

When you say "worse than any other car" do you mean other J-bodies, or other types of cars? These aren't Cadilacs, they're economy cars.

My cars are all fairly quiet. They don't compare to nicer cars, but they aren't as bad as what you seem to be describing.

Are there any other noises besides the road-noise?

Not really any other noises except some squeaking sounds towards the back passenger side... more of a rattling sound really. Not sure what that is, but I think it is unrelated. Most of the noise seems to come from the front. I know it is no caddy, but even compared to say, civics, my 1990 buick century, my father's 01 silverado, my sisters 00 grandam, and I had a 97 cavy once too, but this one it seems really loud. You know the sound you hear when you go over a bridge or overpass or whatever? It is like it always makes that sound. And when I do actually go over one it is EXTREMELY loud. I want to get to the bottom of what it is and get rid of it because it makes it really annoying to ride in. Are there any specific parts that have a habit of breaking around 50,000 miles that could be causing the problem?

Tires. What brand/size do you have, how much tread?
Tires get louder as they wear. Cheap ones can get very loud.

I just put Bridgestone Potenza RE750s on my Sunfire, one of the big factors in my decision was people's opinions on roadnoise as they wear. FWIW.

seems like you may be describing a bad wheel bearing? i kno my ride sucked even before my coilovers. but it wasn't as bad as youre descibing. i know when my wheel bearings failed the roadnoise (which was the w/b) sounded like a skateboard and got progressively louder as i increased speed. it was unbrearable. i had to shout to talk to my passengers... ugh...

these damn j-bodies are like a**holes... everybody has one!

Tires are the ones that came on it. They are goodyear somethings. Last time I had someone check they only had 5/32 of the tread left. Could that be causing it? I hope it isn't the wheel bearing, but if it is, would that be covered under my extended warranty?

yes yes yes yes i know what you are talking about! my car is so dang annoying. i personally think its the paper thin fire wall. i want to dynamat the whole interior but thats pretty pricey! but anyways if you got very little traed getin new tires will help. ive got the micheline pilots xgt x4s on my ride.(tire style letters may be off)they didnt seem to solve the problem but they helped! but hey if you got the time and money try to do what you can.,but for now i just turn up the stereo.

put some carpet underlay on the floor, under the carpet, that apparantly makes a big differance.

Dynamatting your car isn't expensive... if you do it yourself... you'd probably spend 200 tops... and it makes a HUGE difference.

It's probably your stock Goodyear Eagle RS-A's... they suck. However I think my 05 LS Sport Coupe has a great ride... and it's all stock. The guy with the '03 probably has blown struts... my mom's '04 LS Sedan has blown struts and the ride isn't bad... but it's bouncy and it bottoms out over moderate speed bumps.

Get better tires. You want a very quiet ride and very good handling Yokohama AVS Db S2 or Continental ContiExtremeContact. If you just want a really quiet tire Goodyear Assurance TripleTreads or really really quiet are the Assurance ComforTreads.

I just got Triple Treads, they are nice and quiet, and awesome in the snow, considering they are all seasons.

Yeah, I work at Goodyear and I've had to test drive a few cars with Tripletreads, they're quiet, but the sidewalls are very squishy.
