i entered in my first auto-x this weekend and was suprised at what the stock platform performed at but im looking for a slight edge. so right now spendin large amounts of cash isnt possible (still in college) but im looking at dropin my 99 z24 around 1.5" with either intrax or suspension tech springs, now can i cut the stems down a lil bit on the struts to compensate for the drop? i know if i just leave em alone they'll blow out..and i know they're not valved for a drop to, but ride comfort isnt my main wory. thanks for any input
amen.
WhatEVER you do, do NOT buy el-cheapo generic branded E-Bay coils. Koni, Eibach, Tein, Ground Control, Gravana. These are the names you should be looking for for springs.
If you do Koni, you should buy Koni struts to match. Konis also work nice with Eibachs and Ground Controls. Tein has their own struts that I hear are very nice, so I would match those up with like-branded springs. Gravana is a complete coilover setup, and is arguably one of the best non-air ride setups available.
KYB AGX should work for a minor drop. Koni doesn't care how low you go, as long as you're not bottoming it out, but Konis are $$$ (also what I bought when I still had my J). Before the Tein and Gravana setups were available, the Konis were hands down the best struts available. Ground control coilovers on top of Koni struts is a setup with very positive comments. I went with the Koni Sport kit (Springs and struts in one package). ~$700 MSRP for a performance oriented 2" drop. Couple it with Addco 25mm sway bars and you've got yourself a mean setup. (basically my old setup).
There ya go. Don't cheap out, it's dangerous, and you'll regret it in short order.

Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.
tein doesnt make struts for our cars. they make springs and coilover assemblies.
also if you dont want the hassle of konis (which require modifications to make fit) tokico d-specs are a direct bolt in and are pretty much the same as konis
now what about the eibach pro springs, they're a progressive spring and you can run them using stock dampeners? which i find hard to believe with a 1.4" drop. guess im guna have to probably bank some money for a lil longer an buy the hole setup
dropping on stock struts is a bad idea....
the struts aren't valved to handle the higher spring rates of the drop springs. if anything, you'll hurt your autox performance more than help it...
what other suspension work do you have done? bracing is cheap and effective. strut tower bars and a subframe or k brace will help the car to be a bit more responsive and don't cost a great deal of money... if your car is equipped with a factory front sway bar, poly endlinks and bushings will help the sway bar to do it's job better.
just some suggestions..

It will stop coming up when all J-body owners suddenly become wealthy. Then it would become a catch-22.
