Which struts should I get?
Sunday, October 07, 2007 4:42 PM
Well, it is time for replacement struts on my car. I'll give you a little background on what is going on. I was involved in a small accident, where a bolt was sticking up in a parking lot and tore up my subframe. The subframe needs replacement. I got a quote from a body shop and turned it into the insurance company. I am going to just do the job myself, and use the money that the body shop would have gotten in labor to fix up some things on the car, the struts being one of them. Right now, the car has 120K on it with original struts, and I can tell that they are starting to go. Pretty bumpy ride, and no real stiffness going around corners.

I've got Eibach Pro-Kit springs right now, and am looking for a nice set up for front and back that will give me a nice smooth ride. I don't care so much if they are made for lowering or not. I've had the Pro-Kit on my stock struts for 5 years and over 60,000 miles, and they have been fine. I just want a decently priced setup that will ride nice. I don't plan on lowering it any further in the future. So that is of no concern. What do you guys recommend?

IMO KYB AGX struts, they are a great match with the pro kit we carry them @ www.TurboTechRacing.com

I bought Tokico's, love them. They're adjustable and have a lifetime warrany. I bought them on e-bay for a really good price.

kyb agxs are great struts for those. you can by tokicos if you like they will work too, but you have to buy the dspecs which are about 300 more than the agx lol. people say you can use the tokico hps (blues) but i still dont trust them anymore than a stock strut. not to mention if you spend the extra 100 bucks on agxs you have a fully adjustable strut where as the hps are non adjustable.

I find it hard to beleive that your factory struts were fine for 60,000 miles. i have the pro-kit and my struts were bad after 5000 miles and the car was only 1 yr old.

you must not had anyone in your back seat the whole time. or you dont know what a bad suspension feels like....and in that case why bother w/ new struts....just go get somejunkyard factory ones.

you also might want to have the car checked out after you replace everything to make sure its within specs. sounds like you were doing 90 when you hit the "bolt" to do that much damage.

Alright, you asshat. I dunno what the @!#$ your problem is. Fine, don't believe anything I say, but I can guarantee you that my factory struts (which currently have 120K on them) performed fine with the Eibach Pro-Kit for AT LEAST 60K. And it is just starting to ride rough. Believe me, they have been FINE, and I know what it feels like when they are shot. They aren't even shot yet...just getting there.

And don't assume things. For your information, I was not "doing 90" I actually wasn't going more than 3mph. It was a bolt that used to support a huge sign post. It was at least an 1" around. And it doesn't take much. It hit my oil pan, ripped a hole in it, then hit the subframe and tore a hole in that and bent it up. When you have a car weighing almost 3000 pounds in motion, a bolt isn't going to stop it as soon as you think.

So the next time you have an attitude, don't give it to me. I don't want to hear about your assumptions and speculations.

Geeze play nice kids i would sugest kyb agx's also if your stock struts lawsted that long on them you are extremely lucky. and leeave it at that. and accidents can happen at any point suspension problems or not. was your suspension bouncy that's normally what happens on stock struts. they can not handle the extra spring strength.
Good luck Luke

No, the suspension has not been bouncy at all. Actually, it hasn't gotten bouncy until the last 2,000 miles or so. Not since the last oil change. The Pro-Kit is only a 1.4" drop. I know that factory replacements struts aren't rated for any drop at all, but I know numerous people who have had similar results with the Pro-Kit on stock springs. It really isn't all that uncommon. Eibach Sporlines on the other hand....that's another story.

whats an asshat? would that be underwear? you just called me a pair of underwear.

lol...3mph...at 3mph if you hit that bolt your car would just stop. ripping a steel subframe at 3mph. not happening....EVER. i guess you have an aluminum foil subframe

and I NEVER said i DONT believe you......just said its hard to believe. and since you swear by it, i dont think my suggestion was bad at all. if your struts lasted that long , why spend extra money on good struts, just get factory ones

Nice double post. But wow...you obviously don't understand physics. Call me a liar, call me what you want. I don't care. You're just some dumbass on the internet that thinks he knows everything. I was there, I know what happened. Whether you believe me or not is your problem. So just stop posting unless you have something useful to say. Otherwise you are just littering my thread.

And thank you to everyone else who posted. I appreciate the opinions. That's exactly what I am looking for. Just want to know what people's experiences have been with certain brands. Keep 'em coming. I have a while until I actually need to order them. Still have to weld in the mounts for the tranny swap I'm doing as well as some other things.

^^Thank you! I hope to get it done in the next month or two. College is taking up too much of my time :-( Still have to find a subframe off a junker, get it sandblasted and painted, get the new tranny in, and a bunch of other little things. Oh well.
