Here are all the supplies. Those are the Gravana Coilovers
old mount on left, new on right. Do you see the difference?
In case you don't, what i did was have a small ring welded into the opening of the mount. Typically on the mounts, which are the 2K mounts btw, the rubber ends up bending inward into the mount. this makes it squeak constantly. Technically they are blown at this point because they have taken such a pounding to cause the rubber to curl but if i replaced them every time they started to squeak, being in NY and PA all the time, i would be changing mounts bi-weekly. I digress. The metal ring keeps the rubber from pinching in. I have taken a bunch of road trips and put about 1500 miles on this new mount design and i have to say it is great. i recommend anyone going through mounts give it a try.
tada, finished mount all finished and installed. Ready to go on the car
And now for the "things you shouldn't do." I didn't tighten down the nut in the strut mount. So a week later i head back to the shop i have access to and go to torque it down and the frickin things snaps right off.
bye bye adjustment hello new strut insert from B&G. Damn them for being in California. had to wait till 11am to call for a part..lol
ooo shiny new box:
protective condom:
yay new threaded body:
time to disassemble:
got all but the spring perch off the old one and onto the new one.....and thats where i ran into problems:
The spring perch had crushed the threads surrounding it making it literally impossible to get off. i ended up putting the body in a vise and using channel locks to take it off. but that only worked until i cracked the perch
welder to the rescue
poor car:
time to re assemble
i also had to find a nut to fit the strut. B&G forgot to include a nut with the strut so i found some at CarQuest. For those that need it, it is metric and 1.25 thread. Not your typical 1.00.
Welp thats my experience. After the whole ordeal i learned two lessons: torque struts properly and don't crush threads.
This is actually the reason i did not go to JCO this year. This all started the Thursday before.

ha, trust me im not very happy about that either. My good tires were on my good wheels before they got destroyed on the way home from the bash. my crappy steelies are all i got. I am anxiously waiting for the tread to go on these puppies so i can get some quality rubber.

Did this new design ended the squeeks?? Any idea if this is the same in sunfires? Ive got a 2000 sunfire and my strut mount is squeaking a lot. Can I apply your method? I have also read that in cavaliers you can use a 95 -99 strut mounts instead of the 2000īs does this also apply for sunfires??????
Anyone driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac...
hey Usher, if you look at the pics, you'll see Machzel is driving a sunfire
