Just out of curiosity...

How much of a drop could the stock struts handle, if any at all?

Im asking this to see if you could get the lowering springs now and lower car at all, then later purchase aftermarket struts when the money is available.

They will not handle any drop.

You could cut and re-weld the shaft, but that will take skill and knowledge to do correctly.

:edit: I believe the valving will still blow out with the increased spring rate...

Go ahead and get your springs now if you can afford it,but if i were you I'd hold off putting them on till you have the money for decent aftermarket shocks.
If money is an issue I'd look into the tokico hp's(blues) shocks, there good shocks for little money compared to the d-specs or konis.
I'm lowered 1.75'' on blues, and the struts work great but i have goldlines and they are pretty stiff spring.
Your stockers will blow in a short amount of time, and i wouldn't trust driving on blown struts, dosent sound safe at all,but its up to you, just sharing my .02.

i rode around on Sportlines and stock struts for over a year under pretty rough driving conditions and the left front was the only one that blew out. with that said i would not reccomend doing that to anyone. it's not the safest of things to do, and its definately the most uncomfortable ride you'll ever experience. i strongly reccomend that if you buy springs, that you save money and buy struts that will handle the drop before you install. and while you're at it do yourself a favor and get new strut mounts as well.
