3rd Gen Balljoint and Tie Rod info
Thursday, April 14, 2005 1:57 PM
Recently I've done a lot of work on my suspension and now some tie rod end and balljoint boots are torn. I have a few questions...

1) Does anyone sell just the boots for the tie rod ends and balljoints? I checked energy suspension but they only make the boots for the 2nd gen. They have a generic tie-rod boot though: http://www.energysuspension.com/pages/tie_r.html

2) A question from another thread (http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=3&i=86346&t=86346) that I'd like to ask here... Are there any performance (better then stock) tie rod and ball joint assemblies available?

Thanks
- Ken

I think you can get Moog ball joints (think NASCAR) at Napa. You have to drill out those three giant rivets in the ball joint to remove it but luckily the new one has bolts!

Im not sure about the tie rods though.

Okay thanks... but no chance in getting just the boot for either? It's a shame because the boots seem to wear way before the joints.

I ended up getting new Moog tie rod ends. The quality is good but the dust boot doesn't have retaining rings like the stock ones did. I checked out a few other brands and Moog is definately the best of the aftermarket tie rod ends, however I think the GM stock ones are still better because the boot seals better. So for anyone who plans on getting new tie rod ends ever... I'd suggest you order up a pair from GM. I was too lazy to replace the balljoints so I don't have an opinion on those yet.

As for boot replacements, I found a couple things. First, the GM tie rod end dust boots are part # 26049394, and the lower balljoint boots are part # 22156765. Unfortunately these don't come up on gmpartsdirect. I talked to a local dealer though and they can be special ordered.

The second option is to go to any parts store that has that self-help section with the misc red packages that say "HELP!" on them (like Advance Auto). If you're lucky they'll have some dust boots there... each package has 2 different sizes. The boots with part number 13566 fit the tie rod ends nicely, and there is a larger one that should fit the lower ball joint. These are made by Motormite. Here's a long link to the dust boot listings:

Have fun!

pretty much all aftermarket so far is oem replacements.

you can get boots, but nothing is really anything to write home about. very few seal decently. grease eventually comes out.

As long as you keep them greased up I think you should be fine. Just keep the boot from cracking. My boots are nearly gone and the tie rod ends still function . I have some moog's as well that are waiting to get put on.
