Alright, so I got 60,000km on my rear brakes, never did them since I bought the car new in 2003 ( a 03 cavy btw ). I had the front disc pads replaced at 35 or 40,000km max, I seem to be a lil' hard on brakes. Now I have to pull the handbrake handle almost all the way and even then It doesn't hold the car as much as it did before. The left drum seems to rub a bit when the wheel spins freely. I was just about to call to have them done tomorrow, but I have nothing to do and I'm pretty good on my hand, so if I don't need any special tools I might as well do them!
What tools do I need, what parts # do I need for the pads, and is there anyway to fix the rubbing in the left drum?
How much time should I expect the whole operation to take? Can I do it safely only using the jack that comes with the car?
Thanks
sounds like you just need to tighten you handbrake you can do this by goin and reverse and pulling up on the handle (i do it on a dirt road to save the tires) do it a couple times and you should notice it works better, the rear brakes should last for a while.
Take off the drum and see how low they are.
I believe the 03+ cavs and fires use a none servo type rear brake system.
Not sure on how to change them, cause I haven't had the need yet. But there were two springs, and probably a snap ring on both shoes. Not sure again.
And to adjust the rear brakes you just go in reverse and apply the brakes. No e-brake.

dont do that. it doesnt work. people say it does and it doesnt. to adjust the e brake cable. take the drums off on each side. on the bottom there is a little spindal that is used to adjust the e brake. also pulling up and down on the e brake does not work either.
I agree with Bagged above. Adjust the rears by turning the spindle. Turn it a couple of notches, put the drum back on and turn the drum checking for rubbing. You want just a hint of shoe rub on the drum to be effective. If your shoes drag too much, you've overdone it. If your shoes don't rub at all, your e-brake is ineffective.

It's probably (the adjuster) on the top. and reversing and applying the brakes is the lazy way to adjust them.

The factory service manual says that the rear brakes automatically adjust whenever you back up and press the brakes. That said, try getting a little speed up (maybe 15mph) and hit the brakes. If this method does not work then you can resort to pulling the drums off.
You don't need to go 15 mph!!!
A normal reverse and brake will do. But if the brakes are too low the adjust will not be able to adjust any further out. So just check the brakes, please!

I got em done finally, 170$CAD down the drain, aww... They do work much better now
The rears seems to squeek a bit when I'm rolling super slow, it is normal I guess for new brakes to do that??
Thanks,
G
I got a 99 z24 I believe the technology is the same?
NE way I dont get any squeel after replacing the rears...ever.
I use crap drums ($18), $60CDN shoes and a spring kit ($25).
thats a grand total of about $120.CDN
I bet the squeel at slow speed is partly because you didnt replace the drums also?
I dunno maybe you need more lube on your contact points.
and dont rule out grease on your new stuff...easy mess up.
