I have a 2004 Ecotec engine that i'm dropping it into my 1999 Cavalier Z24. The engine just arriveed on friday and i'm taking it apart to rebuild it completely forged so it can handle the boost that i'll be running. I got the valve cover off no problem, but i can't seem the get the cylinder head to come off. I've taked out all 10 of the head bolts and every other bolt i can see that would be holding it down. I can lift part of the cylinder head off but not the part near the timing chain, it just won't budge. Can anyone help me with this??????
I don't believe it will work. Two different engines completely.
i'm switching engines completely. it can be done and has already been done.
Did you get the bolts out from the timing chain cover area? I think there's a couple in there (around where the cams are) that you may have missed.

i found two on the casing by the cam gears. but thats it. i don;t have the timing chain off though. i can't seem to get enough slack to slip it over the gears in the timing chain casing
remove the chain tensioner and take the chain off. if that dont work remove the cam gears but the chain has to come off first

Oh yeah... if you don't have the timing assembly off, you won't be able to get the head off. Heh...
Take the tensioner out, then the chain, then the cam gears, then you should be able to get somewhere
MARK THE CHAIN and the sprockets before you remove it... clean off a couple of links and use some paint. It'll make timing it up later on MUCH easier.

i can't get the tensioner out. i took the bottom bolt off of it, and the bolt on the outside of the head that puts pressure on the tensioner, but still can't get the chain off. i don't need to take the cam gears off though to take the head off, only the chain. Right now there is slack in the chain i can move it with no problem, just not enough slack to get it over the sprocket. but the head still won't even crack a seal, thats why i'm wondering if i missed a bolt or two. i had a diagram of the LD9 engine and every bolt that went into it, but i can;t find one for the 2.2L ecotec, only wiring diagrams and a very rough outline of the engine.
Wow now that I read it again, I though you wanted to put the eco head on a 2.4.
Where do you live at. I have rebuilt an 03 Ecotec for a class I took. I will help you if needed in person and are close by.
Anyways, you got all the head bolts correct?
The timing chain must come off first, thats the way I did it.

Yeah Canad is way to far.
Also I tore apart and rebuilt a new one for a class, not the one in my car.

thats awesome. thats alot for that
you know you have to use a prybar right? its kinda hard to get off of the dowel
pry bar and aluminum head-block + screwed motor
wood block and a mallet to break the seal. lift
