Hey there. I'm looking right now at buying a 2000 Z24 5-speed. It's in mint shape, runs like a charm as far as I can tell, although I'm getting my uncle (mechanic) to give it a once-over to make sure it's sound, but I'm sure it will be. It's black, tinted windows, sunroof... basically fully loaded. Theres 147 000KM on it, and they're asking just shy of $6000 for it. This a good price for something like this? I'm sure I can get the price down at least a little bit, but what would you pay for something like this? It's at a dealer and there is a warranty, but I'm also paying cash so I know that gives me a little more room to move around with the price as far as they're concerned.
Also, are there any major common problems I should be aware of? I've heard about the water pump issue and the price tag attached to it, but I think I also read that the issue was solved in the '98 or '99 models and upwards.
Basically, I kinda got screwed a little when I bought the sunbird, and I'm trying to double and triple-check everything before I make any commitment to it, so anything anyone can tell me would be greatly appreciated.
Also, as an aside, if I do pick this up, how difficult is it to install a head unit in these cars? If it's too much work, the head unit I currently have isn't that great, and the only beneficial thing is that it plays MP3/WMA CDs (But it was free so I won't complain at all), so if it's more trouble than it's worth, is it at all difficult to wire the amp for my subs into the factory radio?
Thanks in advance,
~Scott
Hello Harashi,
I would say its fair price for the car if its in good shape and the motor is reasonable for that year.Plan on a rebuild or new engine soon though, at that mileage it should be expected anyways.I'm a sucker with low credit thanks to a stealership, so I bought my 98 Z24 black in pretty good condtion for 3,500 , minus the clutch that makes noise.Since you have cash to knock it down a few hundred, at least should.should be a great deal and a new money pit that you will be cursing at for sometime to come if you buy it
As far as any huge problem areas, I don't think any more than any other car in that same year would give you.plus you have a warranty if so right? if not you get a chance to work on it from the start like me with my clutch, no warranty, but the dealer lot is paying half for it if i want since i got it like that.
Good luck and hope it all works out for you.
Kris.
a few hundred?.. ive knocked my cars both down damn near half price. I personally would never buy from a dealership. I bet they got that car in on a trade and paid about 3 grand for it. id say ofer 5k cash if they say no walk out. Then if you must have it go back the next day or 2
Check the local autotraders etc just do some homework im not saying its a bad deal but just look around and dont be impatient when buying a car.
i notice its KM so it must be canadian..lol so the price but be somewhat less thats a good thing i suppose..lol still look around
Yeah, I've been looking around for awhile. Looked at one that was going for $4900 (and yeah it's Canadian), but the underside was already showing signs of rust (It was a 2002) so I walked away from that one. I've never bought from a dealer before, but I get what you mean about the price. I guess I never really thought that the profit margin was that big, although now that you mention it, I don't doubt that you're right, and I'll see what I can do to get the price down more.
Thanks for the advice though, I'll see what I can do when I head up either tomorrow or Thursday to talk about the price with the guy.
Don't worry about any engine rebuilding BS people tell you, they probably misunderstood it for miles not km, typically a 2.4 will last past 200k. Also I would be looking at finding a better deal with less km, I know for a fact that you can find 2000ish Z24's with just below 100k for 6000-7000$ off lease from GM. Check autotrader.ca.
Yeah, you're probably right. I know there's plenty out there that are better deals, but I'm being maybe a little too picky in wanting a 5-speed, and most are automatic. Also, alot of the ones in my area that are in the auto trader are asking more money and have more KMs on them.
I did find one for $6000 today though. White 2001 Z24, fully-loaded, 5-speed, doesn't say engine size but I'm assuming it's probably the 2.4. 123 000 KMs on it. Possibly a better deal do you think?
I bought my '03 last Sept with 34,000 miles at a dealership. They were asking $7999 but i got it for $5850. Dealer markup is huge on asking prices. I offered $5500, they countered with $6500 and i got up to walk out the door saying they were not in the ballpark. They caught me before i got in my truck, asked me what I would pay i wrote down $5700. They came back with $5850 and it took it. Mess with them, tell them it's too much money for the car, what do you have to lose? They will not go up, it's your ballgame.

Keep looking, last spring i bought a 99 z24 with no options, with 74,000 kms not miles for $5,300 canadian. Just gotta find the right prices.
