I just got my recall notice for my 99 Z24, the recall notice is for "Ignition Circuit Terminal Events"
The problem is, my Cavalier is in Europe (Croatia), we shipped it there in 2002 and i just got the notice last month. i havn't seen any GM dealership there and even if there was, i wouldnt trust them to work on my Z.. My question is, how important is it to get this problem fixed? and is there a way i could buy the parts myself (i heard its just a relay) and fix the ignition problem my self?
i thought it was only a hazard if you held the key in start for more than 15 seconds??
either way, i never had it done and my car is fine, im sure its not as big a deal as they make it out to be

Basically heres the reason the recall exist.....
Some chick goes to the mall with her friends. She goes out to her Cavalier to find it doesnt start, but cranks. So okay littel mrs dumbass cranks and cranks the thing but it still doesnt start, so she continutes to crank. And suddenly all the voltage going through the circuit is enough to start a fire.

ive see a few J's at work with the Ignition recall fire. ive never seen one totally charred, most of them ive seen have a melted steering column, dash board and windshield.
but im sure there are some out there that have been totally destroyed by the recall problem.

I refuse to get this done. They install it all sloppy to begin with. I know someone with one of these not installed in you are interested. As stated already it is a possible hazard if you hold the key in the start position for extended period of time.

I got mine done only because my father was the tech who did the work.
But now it seems more difficult to start... oh well, I'm used to it now.

not to nitpick, but voltage doesn't flow, and current causes fires, not voltage
but basically thats what happens

I got mine done mainly cause it was FREE!!! lol. But my car is a 01 Z24. Took it in and suprisingly had it back the next day (usually the dealers in my city take 2-3 days to fix something that is as simple as pulling a part and putting a new one in). But yeah, if you can find a GM dealer (or company that GM owns... i think they own something out ur way, They should be able to honor the recall
got mine done, it was a sloppy install. I might fix it once the weather gets warmer.

My "recall relay" has resulted in the following:
1. My car starting itself, in gear, and putting itself thru a garage door
2. My car refusing to start
3. My car's starting getting stuck "on" so it would not stop cranking
I'd suggest not to get it done... but if you really want it, I'll mail you one of the three I have sitting here.
Mine was sloppy install, but I made it a lot lease sloppy and never had a problem.

DO-IT-YOURSELF by asking the dealership for the part, it should all be free anyway cuz it is a recall. The dealership gave me the part and printed out the GM procedure steps for me to do it myself. Whether you do it or the tech at GM does it this is what you need from the headquarters to do it right.
ALL recalls are free so never be afraid to get it fixed even if it is done sloppy. Go back and demand they do it right.

Wrong terminology but whatever.
Lots of people are going to do that. They dont know any better. Doesnt make them stupid or anything. Somes car wont start so they turn the key and try to get it to turn over. Sound logical to me. I dont care how long they hold it in for, the @!#$ thing should not catch on fire
May be it is my dealer ship.
I had mine done and it did not look sloppy. John i get you did not even notice that it was done on my car. Have had no problem at all since they did it. May be the tech who did if for you guys just did sloppy work. The dealership i deal with do real good work. On modified cars that other dealers won;'t touch.

I knew your car had it. We saw it during your swap. Can't miss those wires.

When I had my Z and got the recall, I just ignored it. So the dealership called me and said I have to come in and get it done. I said there is no way I am bringing it in and let you guys touch my wiring. So she said I had to waive liability if a fire started and I said ok haha.

if your in europe look for the closest opel dealer if theres no chevy, pontiac, buick, cadillac, gmc, saturn, saab, or hummer dealers around, if there is any of those dealers they can do the recall.

i have a question if you bought the car used of a private seller is the part still free? i know i prolly sound dumb but im just wonderin?
yea its still free because it was a gm recall on that vehicle and i had the work done too wasnt sloppy at all i dont know what crappy dealers you guys went through but marquart cevy does a damn good job around here how the hell does a relay start your car when its in gear anyways?
Got punctuation? LOL! That was painful to read
The relay didn't start my car... but it engaged the starter motor, and since it was in third, the starter motor cranked the car forward. Pretty torquey little starter
so sue me i hate punctuating things i write unless i absolutely have to lol, and yea they use the same starters on the gmc 1500 and i coulda swore i saw it on a kodiak once
Hey , you can make your ignition recall pack yourself. All it consists of is a single pole relay and some wire. The relay Is used to get the High current away from the switch in the column. This is what you will need from your local parts store:
1 30 amp relay with a mounting tab, can be double pole or single pole
4 insulated blade terminals (blue ones will work for 12 guage wire, yellow for 10)
1 large ring terminal for the battery post of the starter
1 large ring terminal for a ground
1 small ring terminal for the small start post of the starter
5 feet or so of 10 or 12 guage wire for cars, house wiring wont work.
Here's what you do, Zip tie the relay to the engine harness below the upper rad hose, take the purple wire off of the small starter post and snip the end off. Put one of the blade terminals on the end. be sure to crimp all terminals securly, if you pull on it when done and it comes off, try again. Attach this purple wire to pin 86 of the relay. remove the ground nut from the top bolt of the bell housing. cut a section of wire to go from the ground post to the relay. put the ring terminal on one end , secure it to the ground post, put a blade terminal on the other end and attach it to pin 85. Get another piece of wire to go from the starter large post to the relay, put the large ring terminal on one end and bolt it to the starter large post, and on the other end put another blade terminal and attach it to pin 30. another piece of wire from the small post on the starter to the relay, small ring terminal to the small post of the starter and the other a blade terminal to pin 87 of the relay.... Done . Any problems let me know
