I have a problem....
Saturday, May 27, 2006 2:27 PM
I've got a problem.. My belt is loose because I need a new tensioner and a uni pulley because my compressor makes aloud noise.... But i was giving my car gas and my belt was slipping because the battery light came on.. and then white smokes comes out my exhaust.. Would the belt cause this...Its a brand new motor .20 over in the pistons polished crank, Shift kit, Exhaust with no cat, Underdrive Pulley, Intake.... also another thing it is doing wont do it long or alot maybe for a second maybe 2 max i'll be driving at a consistant speed about 30mph and sometime it sounds like it missfires but it wont do it long or real bad...

slowsunfire if i were you , i'd look into getting that belt situation straightened out asap because the other stuff is merely scratching the surface compared to the damage a broken belt can do plus you say your blowing white smoke at times, on a new motor you don't have a warranty of some kind. normally white smoke indicates a cracked head/block or water having gotten in somewhere, as for the compressor issue you can try a unidrive pulley but i believe and don't quote me on this most of the J body compressors at least the 03 through 05. not sure what year yours is were noisy though they did work and cool the car at any rate.

what kind of car? Assuming its a sunfire gt. White smoke from the exhaust wouldnt be caused by the belt. What does the smoke smell like? If the engine is misfireing then it may be antifreeze, no miss prob oil. Then again without smelling it ireally cant tell for sure. Reguardless its got to be related to the top end of your engine, more than likely the head or gasket. Did you replace the head bolts when you had the engine redone? Gotta do that, Torque to yield bolts in there.

The other problem that u got I dont know , you need to fill out your profile first.

well true, and if it is a cracked head or even a gasket issue that can wind up causing major probs down the line can't it mechanic.

everything was torqued right my brother works at penn and he did the motor..and my car is a 1996 i probly posted in wrong threat and no the motor isn't under warranty because it was rebuilt my car blew up from nitrous so i took the bottom end got everything done .20 over polished crank and all. even went ahead and bought a new head... a gasket kit and all. I do not have ac its just ima replace the ac compressor with a uni pulley and get a new tensioner tomarrow. Also remember the car got only 427 miles on it. It wont smoke when i give it half throttle or wut not just when Im getting on it it could be just because its only got 427 miles on it and i only got on it a couple times and only smoked twice and but its a new motor so i dont get on it alot i just havet to get out there like on beltways and @!#$...

Do you know if there are chrome molly rings on the pistons?

That will cause the smoke. They are harder than the cast rings and dont seat well. Making it burn oil. You need to find out so you arent chasing the wrong problem.

exactly Joe if stuff is getting past the rings it will cause the white smoke as will a cracked head/block etc we had a chrysler years ago the 3.0 mitsubishi 6 the rings had started to go on it and oil would drip onto the hot manifold and would burn oil like nothing you'd ever seen before.

Is it using oil? A new motor will burn some especially using the crome-moly rings, i've built 15-20 and they all do it until broken in with those rings. But it's not white white smoke, usually grey. Hope you changed the motor oil shortly after first starting it up, maybe after an hour of operation. Moly lube used for breakin/first start is hard on the motor if left in. Hot oil dripping on the manifold will cause white/grey smoke, make sure it's not leaking on
that. FIRST fix the belt problem, then go from there.
