2.4L Upgrade/replacement

When i get back from deployment im going to have a little extra money. I havent decided yet if im going to get a different car or keep upgrading the sunfire. But if i do i want to replace the old 90,000 mile boat anchor 2200 i have in it right now.

Im wanting to stay legal and to do that for california id have to get the 2.4L

2.4L

Now, whats so different about the 2002 2.4 to make it cost so much more?

Im also wanting to get the gm supercharger, and if i get the older one i believe theres some things id have to change to get it to work, and would gm even flash the older motor?

heres a link to a place that sells the supercharger, good price and place or not?

Supercharger

Gmpartsdirect lists it even cheaper at 1,766

Any thoughts?

If i stayed with a J id really like 2002 Eco Ls Sport... but i dont know about all that

it wouldn't be legal in CA to drop in the 2.2 Eco? that would be a better way to go than the 2.4. the Eco is still supported by GM, still produced, and easier to find. that's one of the issues behind the high prices of the 2.4. they're really becoming harder to find.

i always thought the rule was that it had to be a motor available in your year to your model car and the motor had to be your year or newer. id love to do an eco though if im wrong... anyone know?

I wouldn't think CA would have a problem wih it, since it's a newer motor, and probably more efficient than your current one, and the LD9.

Well for one the 2.4 is not hard to find. Those prices are about right, and much cheaper than buying it from GM. If it was me I would get a junkyard motor (running one) for about $500-800 with probably 40k on it. Also it would be slightly easier to put the 2.4 in your 98, than a Ecotec. There is some differences in the 2.4's, but only from 96-98, and then 99+. Probably the reason in it showing the 96 by it's self is because the ECU is different in 96, also has a oil level sensor in 96 as well. 99+ has a slight compression bump, and smaller start, different injectors, no EGR. With all that you can put any year 2.4 in any year J. All that matters is if you have the parts to match the ECU (like EGR, low empedance, or high empedance injectors). For the GM charger to mount you have to have a starter from the 99+ car (they are smaller). With HPTuners you could use any 97+ wiring harness and ECU and make the charger work. I would recommend getting a 2000+ motor.
