My car has this annoying clunk or bong on bumpy roads it seems to come from the passenger side rear I´ve put new hinges for the door, new bushing for the rear axle, new shock absorber and mount and it still makes the noise. Can someone give me some light
I am starting to believe the noise comes from somewhere under the mouldings inside.Help.

No one has annoying noises on your J´s??? Mine is cursed. Today I drove a Camry 93 and it seems to go in the air, no noises at all even on bumpy roads, this car is 3 years older than my Z-24 and is usually driven by a choffer, in spite of that it is a world of difference with the GM´s.

It might be the boot around the Strut that covers the hydralic rod

It´s a rubber boot I doubt it,anyway I will use new tie straps for the boot. I´m thinking it may be the upper strutt mount that may be broken...waiting till my mechanic friend has time to get the whole shock absorber out and check everything.Thanks.

I see you have a Z, Its the sway bar. The sway bar in made into the rear axle. It looks like a piece of 1/2-3/4 inch pipe that goes from side to side of the rear axle and is welded at each end. The weld breaks loose and cause the noise. You can try to have it rewelded, I normally just change the axle, takes maybe an hour to do if you have done it before.

Is there a sort of anti sway bar inside the rear axle? Is that what you mean? I thought J´s did not come with a rear sway bar. My Z is a 96 and for sure doesn´t have one on the rear, I ordered one Addco 638 from Sumitt hope to get it in a few days.

Its your strut mount man. The noise your talking about is so common in early 3rd gens that its actually a factory recall. My 97 does the same thing, I took it to the dealership, they replaced the mount's for free, and a month later the noise came back. I havn't found a way to get rid of it yet. It doesn't do it all the time anymore though thank god, for some reason the noise likes to come back when it's really cold or damp, I've pretty much just learned to live with it, or just turn up the good old 2,000 watt stereo and drown it out.

BTW, you car didn't come stock with sway bars, and a broken or disconnected sway bar sounds really simular to a cracked or broken spring.

Your right the clunk, clunk noise comes and goes and sometimes it is really loud others it is not. I replaced the strut and mounts with KYB and also the axle bushing a few month ago, but the noise is still there. The guys at GM told me it might be an electropoint of the body that broke...I don´t seem t get used to the noise. Well thanks anyway, will turn the stereo higher and try to forget it.

The sway bar is made into the rear axle, look in (from underneath) the u shaped bar of the axle that goes from wheel to wheel, if there is a pipe in it, you have an axle with a welded in sway bar. I dont think many people know about the welded in sway bars because they are hidden. If you want to compare your Z axle to another base model J You'll see what Im talking about.

weebel, I know what your talking about, My wife's 98 did the same thing, but she has a base model 4 door with no sway bar, I put 2 new struts on the rear and no more noise.

Luis , It is possible that you may need struts. I figured it was the sway bar since its a Z and that I have changed a few of the axles because of broken welds.

It's weird, the car hasn't made the noise all summer. It seems like every fall it starts up again. Then when summer comes, it slowley goes away. Hopefully when I have the cash to install some Koni's, the noise will stop.

My car doesn't have sway bars of any kind beause its a 2 door sunfire SE, but it does have a 2.4 engine. Whoever originally ordered my car must not have been paying attention when they checked off the option list.

If anyone fiqures out how to get rid of the sound let us know, it's a common problem.

Finally a friend took out the strut (rear right) the upper support is broken, I´m waiting for a new one. I thought I had put new ones with the KYB, I did not in the back... my mistake. Hope this solves the noise, thanks Joe for the tip on the sway bar, I will check that also when installing the new upper support.
