I have a 97 2.2l Sunfire 3 speed that I swapped a 2002 2.2l Sunfire 4 speed. I swapped the engine, 4spd tranny, and the under the hood wiring harness from the ecm to all the engine sensors, I also swapped the ecm under the fender..
I got the motor and tranny in it. I connected the 2002 harness to the 1997 harness under the hood. There is the big plug at the fire wall and they hooked together and some wires are the same color and some are different but there is only one wire missing in my cars original harness that leads to the interior. The car fires right up and runs for about 3 seconds and dies. It dies like the fuel was cut, if you turn the key all the way off and then back on it again fires right up.
I did notice the tach does not work. Do I need to swap the entire interior harness to make this work? I do realize the evap system is completely different, but I should be able to wire it in or not worry about it. I can register it in a county that does not require emissions.
Everything should work there has to be something simple, or do I need to gut the inside of both cars and swap the interior harnesses? How will the harness hook into the cluster, column switches, hvac, etc. from the new car into the old car?
Tomorrow I will try and hit it with ether to see if it stays running, that would tell me if the car is cutting injector pulse, possibly because it sees no tach signal. I will search the sight and see if I could find anything but any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!
theft system.
You need to also swap the cluster, all of the interior wiring, Body control module, air bag module, antilock brake module,,,,,, pretty much every wiring harness and device that plugs into it. no speedo, temp. nothing. Even the fuel gauge goes through your 2002 ecm.. The Problem your running in to is that the 2002 engine is class 2 serial data and your car is setup with UART data . Easy way to tell what you have is to look at the wires in your Obd2 data port under the dash, If you have a purple in there its class 2 serial and if there is a tan wire and no purple you have UART data.
Any way the theft system of the 2002 is in the BCM, that you dont have , so its looking for it. Your 97 body has the theft system in the cluster, and isnt picking up the 97 ecm through the uart data.
Short answer ..... You need more parts.
Do a search this topic has been beat to death.

What terms should I be searching for, I have searched inoperative tach, passlock, bcm and wiring swap and have not found much? Am I in the wrong forum??
And thank you for the great response I think I am figuring out what I need,
Can I bypass the pass lock and get it to run, or will I have a lot of other issues even if it lets it run, ie no cluster?
I have a 2200 4 speed harness out of a 99 sunfire with the computer if you would need it. Just pulled it out the other day and is uncut
The only thing that will work now in your cluster is the fuel gauge, no tach, speedo, odometer ,warning lights.
As far as I know you need a BCM for your 02 in order to get it to run, there are bypass thinkys out ther but I dont think tose will work in your case cause your trying to run 2 different data systems.
I would look up
echo swap, since that is the most common need for uart to class 2 serial. The v6 swaps touch base a little on here with that issue but they are sort of a class of their own. See my swap cars are both 01's so they are both class 2 , there are guys running the class 2 v6 stuff in pre 00 J's but they are wiring in 00+ Bcm's for the theft and maybe other stufff. Go into a
v6 swap thread to see more.

Hmmm, I guess I will bite the bullet and pull the interior harness. This car better get better mileage, all this for one extra gear!!!
if you use a harness out of of a 98 to 99 sunfire or cav with the 2.2 4 speed you won't have to switch the cluster, and interior harness
Well I got the harness swapped and it cranks but does not fire. I also noticed the theft light is flashing so I will search and see if I can figure out why.
It also sucks the donor car had no power windows or locks and mine does, so I am going to have to hard wire those in to get them to function again.
This is such a mess!!!!
If you choose to do what luke suggests , remember that 98 was the last year for the EGR valve so , if you were to even try it , 99 would be the only possibility for engine wiring. but dont forget that you might end up with a late 99 which may end up being class 2.

Ok it runs. It has been a very long day. I basically swapped 4 harnesses. The front headlight harness, the under the hood harness, the harness under the dash, and the harness from under the dash to the brake lights and all the doors. What a mess.
On running, I found that when it cranked the theft light flashed. I found references to leaving the key on, I did this three times till it stopped flashing and it fired right up and seems to run great.
I still need to put the whole interior back in. Hard wire the door locks and windows, install the brake master and top off the trans. Also the EGR canister and lines to the back of the motor. Then we will see how she goes.
A word of advice. I tried pulling the harness around the interior. It just ended up being fasted to gut the thing.
I dont know if I would do this again for the extra gear in the trans. Maybe when I fill it up and see a little better mileage I will be happy. Today I almost said screw it and scrap both cars.

Can't do that. Needs the entire 02 harness, all the way through the car but it looks like you found that out.
I hope the extra gear isnt the only reason you did that, cause I dont think there is much difference, well not enough to justify what you spent. you might have to drive the wheels off of it to even break even.
