well i got a 96 cavalier sometimes when i go to start it it fires up runs for a half of a second and dies and if i try to start again it does the same thing this only happens every once and a while but it is a pain any help would be awesome thank you
i'd look to low fuel pressure. be it pump on the way out, or clogged fuel filter, it sounds like a fueling issue to me.

well i think the fuel is ok but when this happens the theft system light flashes on the dash
Since it does it once in a while, and not continuously I'd say it's because it's getting old. My buddy's 96 Sunfire started doing that. Thing had about 200,000 on it too.

Thanks Man, Hats off to you -
Don't need this now but what a great thing to know. This forum and it's participants are AWSOME!
check the o rings on ur injectors or replace em that should fix it if not its ur fuel pump or u got no vacum to your regulator but more than likely pull your injectors and check those
if it start the next day it can be driven harder
Thats not a fuel issue. Its definatly anti theft. If it was injector o rings you'd know it cause they would always leak, not just sometimes. The car will still fire up and run no problem without vacum to the FPR. I didnt run it on my race car for a while and it was fine. It just bumps up the fuel pressure, the computer sees that and backs down the injectors a little to compensate and you end up with the same fuel mixture in the end. And if the injectors were bad it would just run like crap when it ran. And i bet his car runs fine for that 5 seconds it does run or when it actually decidedes to stay running.
Anyways, if it starts and dies and you have an anti theft light then it is the anti theft. Since its intermittent I'd be looking for a loose ground. When i first put my cavy back together from a shell I had the same start and die issue with the anti theft light on. Turns out the ground for the ecu wasn't hooked up. Once I hooked it up I didnt even have to do the relearn procedure, it fired right up. I used the same key, cluster and ecu which is why the relearn wasn't nessisary.
good luck with it.
