Im just curious because i went to a junk yard today and saw a ecotech sittin in a 00+ yr model sunfire
late 2002 could have had them all 2003+ DID have them
it may have been a 02 or 03..i just thought they always came with the 2.2 sohc or 2.4 dohc...i would look at gettin the motor but the guy said its no good
No such thing as a SOHC in a J. Your choices are LN2 (2.2 and 2200 OHV), LD2 (95 only z24s), LD9 (2.4 Twin Cam DOHC), and the 2.2 Eco DOHC.
The Eco was put in Sunfires in 02 in certain GT model. I think it was a mid-year change from the LD9. I hear the 02 Sunfire Eco combo is quite hard to come by. 03 was a body style change.
the correct spelling is

there is no H in that word
and the only other 2.2 ever to be in a J was a Overhead Valve motor.

I dont think it was the GTs, just any upper trim Sunfire cause I've seen non-GTs have them. kinda like how they dropped the Z24 moniker, they dropped the GT name as well. they stopped the LD9s in April 2002 and started using Ecos in the top trim cars, and still used 2200s until the end of the model yr. it was all Eco, all the time after that

the sunfires in 02 were very rare to have ecos there are a few out there but as MOST sunfires were built in mexico, mexico was also the plant that ran out the 2.4 ohio switch to the eco sooner. i remember reading something somewhere that ohio was building cavaliers with ecos a month or 2 before mexico
its also interested em to see the anual numbers of models out of each plant cause all 3 sunfires i owned were mexico build and the cavalier i have was ohio it seems ohio was on the cavalier build list and mexico was the sunfire builder i wanna see if it was a 50/50 split of if 1 plant did build MORE then the other of a model

you can get a 2.2 eco in a normal SE sunfire it dont have to be the GT they started doing it in 02. my friend had the 2.4 in his base 4 door cavalier.

saw one of these on the junkyard while pulling parts for my 00+ front end on my old car. I looked over and saw the 2.4 and didnt think anything of it. 20 mins later, noticed it was a 4dr but didnt think nothing of it still, until I remembered it was the same car with the LD9 in it. def confused me for a min

ok well thanks for the info, i was just very suprised to see it..and the junk yard is right up the rd from my house so next time i go ill check the yr model to see if its a 02 or 03..and it was also green with a silver sunfire badge no gt or anything
Ecotec started coming in the J on build date 11/01--- model year 2002. They came in the Cavalier LS Sport (Canada- Z24), and Sunfire SE & GT.

For the 2002 model year, there were 60,487 Sunfire non-GT coupes made. 7,245 of those had the 2.2L Ecotec in them. And 59,172 sedans, 5,487 of those with the Ecotec. And last but not least, 4,639 Sunfire GT's of which 2,541 with the Ecotec.

Oh, production plant. Gotcha.
There is a plant code RPO as well. I think it's OLF for the convertibles, all made at Lansing, Michigan. No idea on the others. Run your VIN and see what RPO pops up for plant code, that should give you an idea.

JBO FAQ says the first digit gives you a country. 1 & 4 for US and 3 for Mexico. I keep thinking Ive seen Lordstown on the sticker on my drivers door but idk for sure.
Yes, but you can't get that information from the production numbers info... just your own VIN. Sounds like Matt wants to figure out how many of each sedan, coupe, etc with each motor, came from each plant. In each color. With black headliners.
