3d j-bodies
Saturday, May 14, 2005 7:55 AM
i was just wondering if anyone had 3d models (for use in programs such as 3d studio, lightwave, maya, etc) of j-body cars. i don't know how many other members do 3d, but i think it may help when people ask for uniquely styled body pieces. i've done custom 3d wheels in the past and would be willing to try out body work on a car, but there is no way i have time to do a whole car myself.

so if anyone's got 3d versions of j-bodies, please let me know
also if anyone's interested 3d, or needs help (specifically with lightwave or just general concepts of 3d) feel free to comment.

That's pretty good MFX.....are you using lightwave to create that? If you are....then I'll get started on a J-body. What preference do you have on which J?

I can't remember who posted this, but I've had it saved on my HD for I think over 2 years. Anyway here it is:

i use lightwave. personally i'd like to see a 03+ cavalier made, but whatever you feel like doing. it'll be used for if someone requests some sort of body style that isn't pre manufactured as a chop and there aren't images for chopping.

pyros, i'm not sure how much that'll help but if you have the 3ds or lwo file email it my way. i think the models should be stock, that way it's a clean slate to work with, but the body kit seems to be comprised of actual parts i've seen.

also if anyone would be interested in making common parts such as wheels, hoods, body kits and or wings, real or conceptual, that would be awesome. idealy someone could ask for their year j-body, some specific parts, paint colors and we could give them shot of what ever angle they wanted to see. if we can pull this off, it could really help out the org.

Man you could set up a site or join up with Nathaniel just for purposes like this! Just a thought

But I use 3Ds Max alot and flamingo sometimes! I don't have them on my personal computer but if you would be willing to send Lightwave over I'm sure I could pick up on it pretty damn quick!

good to see enthusism

if you go to http://www.newtek.com you should be able to find a demo for lightwave 8. if you want the full version, get a file sharing program (such as bittorret) and get it that way. lightwave can't just be sent, it normally requires a usb dongle to start up the program, but thankfully nice people that use bit torrent have made cracks for that along with versions that don't need registering.

i have seen the interface for 3ds max but not used it, it's similar however the main difference is that modeling and animation take place in two seperate programs, but they can be used at the same time. any changes made and saved in the modeler version automatically update in the layout program. however the only need for layout when it comes to stills is to set up lighting etc and render, so unless while doing that you notice a huge problem with the model, there wouldn't be much of a reason for using both at the same time. i'm sure some of you wanna see j-bodies doing crazy things you'd only see in need for speed underground and the fast and the furious tho.

for everyone that's willing to put an effort forth in this, i say thank you and wish only the best of luck. if any of you have questions about 3d, the program lightwave, or making cars and or wheels in 3d, feel free to contact me.

No promises, but I'm going to try to get acquainted with lightwave and see what I can do. I've worked with 3ds max in the past but it doesnt agree with my system for some reason (not a crappy rig btw ).

pyros, if you can manage to get 3ds to work on your computer that would be fine, 3ds files can be opened in lightwave, i'm not sure if it works the other way. use what you're comfortable with and if you do dive into lightwave, i'd be glad to answer any questions any of you have as best i can. i only have experience with versions 7.5 and 8.0 and i'll a little rusty, haven't used it in a few months, but i'm slowly gettin back into it while design some stuff for a friend's star war's fan film.

everyone's that willing to help with or learn a 3d program be my guest, the more the merrier. i had a crazy idea that perhaps that those using 3d could design a custom body kit, if there would be interest, get it made. but that's just a thought for the future...

Do you guys have any understanding of how long it takes to model a car in any modeling package? Its not a matter of "I'll just get aquainted with it." There are many fundamental concepts that need to be learned before attempting to do anything of that sort. You have to be extremely dedicated to really even fabricate just a door alone and make it look like it follows the contours of a realistic car.

Below is an image I did in Maya 6.5 and rendered with Mentalray.

^And I don't even consider that to be good. That was just my first attempt ever.

I forgot one thing. If anybody is actually serious about getting 3d j-bodies. Certain websites will sell bare bones models. They will cost a few hundred though.

I cant speak for others but i know in my post i DID say that I used to use 3DS back in ver 4

so this means I DO have a understanding of basic concepts and it IS only a matter of me getting RE aquanted with 3DS and ver 7. and remembering all my basics and practicing for awhile.

and MFX's wheel sure looks pretty damn good so sounds liek he knows his stuff and the others who posted have said they too have worked in a 3D program before.

so I honestly dont know who your comments are directed towards.

your room looks very nice. good job on it. have you worked on any autos? if so post them up for us to oogle

I acquired some car models for 3DS MAX. If have quite a few, but none of them are Js. I have a feeling that some of you that have some 3D skills like you have image manipulation skills that you can create a J out of any of them. I don't know how good they are cause I don't have 3DS MAX installed yet. Let me know if you want them I'm still scrounging around for Lightwave models. I've found some, but I don't know if vehicles are involved.

I used to work on Bryce, so I have somewhat of a concept of creating 3D models, but not creative enough to do cars.

I've modelled in 3ds5 and Ued1/2/3.0 so I've got a pretty firm grasp on 3d modelling.

When I get home today I think I'll sit down and try to come up with something.

i know how long it takes to model high quality objects, i've been using lightwave for over a year, before i left college the teacher that just started teaching it had to ask me how to do things, and his students would come to me looking for help. good things take time. i understand your concern especially for those with little or no experience with such programs, however there are a few of us here that i'm sure are quite capable. the only reason i myself am not woring on modeling the cars is that working 13 hours a day between two jobs leaves little free time.

for those of you interested in turned j-bodies 3d, don't be discouraged. it will take time and lots of effort, but it's not impossible. the best way to go about modeling is a car is to find blue prints or images there of. if those cannot be acquired, exact front and side views from the same height and distance of the desired model will have to be gotten.

again good luck and thank you to everyone that's willing to help out with this.

just a couple more examples of lightwave

What's your email Nate. Your registry doesn't have it in there.

I just tried downloading 3DS on my Win 98SE. I guess it only works for Win 2000 and XP. Doesn't matter anyways. I'll probably just use a Mac version for my G4. I think Mac can render 3D images better anyways.

my first project for this is going to be to recreate a tire and wheel (probably stock alloy for a 95-99 cavalier) with standard tread, and a unique wheel with street tread. i'd have these things all ready to go, but unfortunately i lost the objects months ago due to a misburned cd on my old laptop. between the 2 wheels and tires, it'll probably take me a couple weeks with what free time i have, but i'll post up renders when done.

any suggestions for the unique wheel? please nothing too crazy or ornate, i'd rather not spend more than an hour or so on the rim if possible. also keep in mind it should look like something that would be manufactured whether it is or not (such as the image in the first post).

also if anyone's got nice performance tires that could get a nice picture directly over the tread that would help for reference. thanx.
