my girlfriend is always bitching about cold car so I'm thinking baout getting her a remote starter for christmas. I tried searching for remote starter but it came up with a ton of threads about people having problems installing them. I'm not looking a fancy alarm or anything, if it has one great, if it doesn't great... just looking for a remote starter with decent range, 50-100 feet??
if you have any sugestions lets hear them and also if you know of any place to get a good deal on one.
You gave me a great digi cam recommendation so im gonna give u my Car Alarm/Remote start recommendation
.. might be a lil pricey for what ur looking for but here is what i plan on gettin really soon
Car Alarm/Remote Start $165 Shipped
I would look at best buy, they have free installation with the purchase of a unit. i'm lookin at getting one but don't think I could install it myself and best buy won't install anything that you buy other places. sorry to jack your thread. but i'm in the same boat asking the same question as you are
hugs and hand pounds, peace
Best Buy and Circuit City both carry DEI stuff. BB has Viper and CC has python, same stuff. The installation isn't really free, but the posted price includes installation and the unit. If you only want a remote start, you're probably looking around $200 installed plus any modules her car might need.

If you are going to do the work yourself I say go with any of the DEI made Responder systems. DEI is a good company and the Responders are a pretty versital alarm/remote start. I have found them on ebay for around 160 before. These are what I am putting in both of my cars. The Responder comes with the brand names of Viper, Python, and a few others. Here is their site if you want to check out the different brands.
I want da "doot, doot".
If you are going to have a shop do it then watch out, I have been told that BB and CC will charge around 400 for the alarm, and like 400 for the install, plus any modules you need. Its not really that hard to install these. depending on the car it shouldn't take more than 3 hours. And that is with allot of disassembly. And Darkstars, I am not too far from you so I might be able to help you out with installing it if needed.
install isn't a problem... I work on cars for a living, unless it involves paint I do everythign myself.
thansk for the input
Viper by DEI is the best on the market, but you would pay for it. We sell the Viper 160 model professionally installed with all anti-theft bypass modules for $309 typically. Most shops carry less expensive models though. If you would take it somewhere to have a shop install it:
1. make sure the installers are MECP certified,
2. make sure every connection is soldered.
If they don't do either, or make excuses why soldering is unneccessary.....run, don't walk, out of the store and never let them even wash your car......

Viper and Python are the same, Python was actually DEI's original alarm brand before they added viper, sidewinder, rattler, etc

viper starters are great.. easy to install compared to the cheap starters..
i would suggest getting a good brand name for a starter.. i learned my lesson!..
^ not to thread jack, but David Tresidder, how long did it take you to install the item you purchased on ebay? and did you had to use and buy other items not inluded with the purchase? and lastly, any soldering required? again sorry!
It took me 3 days(5-6 hours/day) but this kit have lot of features(window roll-up, trunk release, power door locks,...)
I had to buy a bypass kit cause my car have a factory anti-theft system.
I soldered every connections but you can buy tap-in wire connectors. I prefer soldered connections cause there much better.

Solder every connection. I fix almost as much stuff, during cold months that other shops tried to install, as I install myself. Like new parking light modules ruined from corroded or shorted out connectors, or more common is completely new ignition switches from shorted t-taps. Check out the installers forums at Car Sound and Performance and see what professionals think about people who install stuff with solderless connections. It will work for a year, maybe two, but eventually then you will have expensive problems.

David, Does that kit do everything that it says on the site? Remote start, locks, trunk, windows, Alarm, etc? And It all comes with it? I know I'll have to get the passlock bypass thing, but otherwise it comes with all that stuff included? And would you recomend it to someone who hasn't done a alarm install before? (I am good with wiring though)
Everything LOUDER than everything else!!
compustar bro....comes with a 2 way remote so you know when its started, it also has alarm, lets you know what door or trunk or anything is open. its very nice. PM me if you wanna know mroe about it

This kit comes with everything they advertise on the site and everything works very good. They also include the starter kill relay. I would recommend it for you cause you seam like having the same knowledge than me in wiring. That was my first install and it took me like 20 hours. Good luck!
Yes, you will need a passlock module. No alarms come with it because there are different modules for different antitheft systems.

First off, don't go to Best Buy for an alarm or remote start. I saw some installs, and they weren't that great. Maybe I'm just picky... Plus everything is WAY overpriced. I bought a Viper remote start for my g/f's car off eBay brand new for $70 and Best Buy wanted $200+. If you want a good remote start system, go with DEI like the other guys said. I personally like Viper and Clifford. They are both almost identical and install is pretty easy (if you are good with electronics and stuff). If you buy the cheap knock-off's on eBay, they don't come with built-in relays, so there is ALOT of wiring involved, believe me. Clifford and Viper have the relays built-in the module, which makes it much more plug and play. I installed a Clifford 3.5X Responder remote start and an alarm in my buddys car this weekend. Took about 6.5 hours to do everything. Remote start, alarm, door triggers, lock, trunk, sensors, etc, etc.. If you have any questions about install, just ask! I'd be glad to help!

The one I bought on ebay includes internal relays. The only relay you need with this kit is the starter kill relay and if you want to connect the truck popper, you will need another relay.
You got lucky then, because alot of the knock-offs don't have built in relays. Especially the remote start units.

Anytime you buy from a large corporation, you will have good installers and bad installers. As far as the price, not sure about BB but at Circuit City, the price that is advertised is the price installed, including labor. The python I have on my Blazer is $70, but installed it's $199.

would you be willing to instruct me thru this in case i run into snags? much appreciated luke.
I guess I would me somewhat leery of that one. First off, its $10, and second, the name doesn't strike me as a DEI brand. Personally, I would recommend getting a complete Clifford or Viper remote start system.
Here's why:
1. A stand alone system will install with no problems. Piggy back systems are kind of iffy sometimes.
2. This is the biggest reason. If you use your stock remote, you will have to be standing with 30 feet or so of your car to start it. Most likely will not start if you are inside your house. With a complete Clifford or Viper system, the remotes have a range of a 1/4 mile in ideal conditions.
If you want me to find an inexpensive system on eBay by DEI, I can find one for you. Let me know, I'd be more than willing to help!

The kit I mentionned above include all that and more. Built-in relays....
I tested the range of the pagers and I was about 500 meters and more away from my car and it works.
With this kit you have a confirmation of engine running when remote start and many feature that a pager alarm have.
You also get 2 pagers.
