Wiring, Cold Cathodes and Multimetering
Wednesday, February 01, 2006 11:09 PM
Hey,
I have 5 questions.

1. Can I use speaker wire for power/negative wire on cold cathodes and such??
2. Where can I buy bulk wire other than ebay??
3. What is the link for the site that says how many amps a certain wire guage can handle??
4. Should I fuse a cold cathodes power lead and if so, what size??
5. How do I find how many amps a certain thing will draw, whether it be cold cathodes, amp remote power on, etc??

Thanks for the help. I tried searching for these except for #3.

1. yes. wire is wire is wire. just make sure you use the right gauge wire. I wouldn't use high end speaker wire for it though. it's a waste of money.
2. Fry's Electronics, Radio Shack, Home Depot
3. a TON of wire info
4. yes. figure out how much the cold cathode is going to draw, and go slightly above that. the fuse should blow in an over-current situation.
5. find the spec sheet. most everything electrical will tell you how many amps it's going to draw. just from looking real quick on the web, the cold cathode lights (like the computer case kind) draw about 5 milliamps.
