I pulled out my Head Unit(Alpine 9811) yesterday to install some new RCA cables. I have a 97 cav. As you probably know, there isn't a lot of room to squeeze in the HU in that cavity, depth-wise.
The old RCAs had low-profile right-angle connectors, the new RCAs do not. As a result, the HU does not fit into the cavity properly. I already chopped off the plastic junk that forms the back of the cradle, but the RCAs are hitting the back wall.
Its black plastic, and has some give to it. I'm wondering what this is. Heater box? HVAC area? Can I drill/cut into this back wall without damaging something? It would be nice to have room and a radio that slides right in without bumping into something.
i know on my 98 fire(i think internal dash pieces are the same.) there is a metal brace behind the head unit. there are three bolts that keep it in place and after that its just managing to menuver it out. keep it around incase you wanna sell the car with the stocker head unit.
yea just cut it out... if it explodes.. u know u did something wrong
lol if you're gonna hack er out, make sure you stay clear of any yellow wire loom, thats airbags and you dont wanna be close when those things go off
You guys arent instilling a lot of confidence here....
there shouldnt be any air bag wires back there at all. but go slow. when i did mine i pulled the HVAc controls out and cut the piece that seperates the section for the radio and the HVAC out. Gave me tons of room to put all the crap in there.
Ok, theres an idea - I'll pull out the HVAC panel and that should give me a much better view of what to expect when cutting/drilling. Don't know why I didn't think of that!
its the main air box
blah, bringing this back from the dead because i'm working on this issue right now

its not the rca's i'm having a problem with...
what are you having problems with then. the harness?? or is the unit itself to big. either way. you cant cut the black airbox in the back of your dash. cause then youl have no heat or air. that box controlls all the "valves" that direct air to every wich way in your car.
i have a single din kenwood xxv-01d in there an epic 160 the wiring for my overhead screen comes back there. a relay. four channel rcas rcas to the epic and then from it to the amps. the power ground and remote to the epic. If i can fit all that with no problem then there isny much you cant. unless you are trying to stuff the hideaway unit in there
