ok well to start things off, about last may my subs stopped working all of a sudden on day when i had my headunit on mute, well couldnt figure it out for the longest time checked the fuse and all and everything on the amp and even hooked the subs up to another amp and nothing, one would come on every now and again but that was it!
these are MA Audio 300 watt rms 600 watt peak dual 4 ohm subs!
so today i had a idea to hook them up to single voice coil, well when i have my volume up to 20 not even a 1/3 the way up and subs set at 2 out of 12 settings my volt guage goes from around 14 volts down below 12 volts.
this doesnt seem right since i have a brand new battery and i believe a 165 amp alt. (new too)
i'm thinkin the way i have them wired now there in a 2 ohm range and im not sure if my amp can handle that! gains are only half way up on the sub channel too!
so my question is if its wired in a 2 ohm setup running on a amp designed for a 4 ohm load will it cause this much of a draw and will it kill my amp?
sorry this is so long just need some anwers! heres some pics to hopefully help!
how it was wired:
and how its wired now:
sorry for the huge pics couldn't figure out how to get rid of extra white space!

if you only have a 1 chanel amp only run 1 sub... if you ask me
i have a 1600 watt MA AUDIO 6 channel amp

If u have dual 4ohm subs u can only have them wired up at 1 or 4 ohms...
ok my question is this, can you only wire them up to one coil on each sub and run them? because thats how it is now and hits hard but i think im running a 2 ohm load that way and if so my amp is saying 4-8 ohm load on the sub channel!
can i destroy my amp or what this was a $950 amp a few years back and i dont want it destroyed!

y not just hook your subs up properly? will you wreck ur amp? maybe. will you wreck your subs? yes. you cant just hook up one voice coil on a dual voice coil sub
well heres the thing as it says up top i had them wired up to both couls but then they stopped working one day and since then they havent worked till today when i only hooked up one coil and not both???
why would the work if only one coil is hooked up but wont work with both???
i totally dont get it
there wired now as 2 ohm so tomorrow im gonna wire them to 8 ohm so i dont fry my amp!

do u have a multimeter? if u do set it to ohms and see if u read around 4 ohms on each coil
with no power to them right?
also my gains aren't more then half way up i was actually under powering them a lil i suppose thats how i dont see why they stopped working the one day!

ya just take the sub out and check it should read around 4 ohms and when u push down or up on it the resistance should go up or down
the 2nd pic you have up there, you will KILL THE SUBS! You have to use both coils on a dual coil sub.
My Myspace Page
well i would love too but i cant! hook up both coils on both subs no worky work, hook up one coils on each sub worky work!
i just dont get it and if i keep them how they are now im gonna fry my amp, my batt, and my alt, all brand new but amp got that 3 years ago for a nice price tag!

you need to walk away from this, disconnect the entire amp and sub system and take the car to someone who actually knows what they are doing, u will destroy your system period, you need to stop now before permenant damage happens although i have a feeling u allready destroyed crap
Its not how fast your car goes....its how much nerve the driver has to push it that fast.
maybe one of the vc is burnt and is causing a short circuit? Set everything back up the way you had it the first time when it still worked, only using one sub. You can have it run at 2 ohms, 8 ohms, or 4 ohms (not sure on the 4). Try to rule out which sub is causing the problem. If neither works like they used to, then it's more likely a problem with the amp. Also, check your ground, that's very important. God knows how many $300 amps I've blown up because of the ground wires coming loose. Yes, the ground wire will cause the amps to shut down periodically, if not permanently, at least in my experiences. The ground wire coming loose will also chance blowing your subs. I dont know how, but when my 800 watt brand new amp died due to only 4 strands of the 4ga. wire making contact, it blew up the subs (there was aLOT of smoke

If this doesnt solve your problem, check with a professional. (I dont mean best buy either, local car audio specialists are your best choices, MJ here for example has MJ Audio and Electronics... mostly kenwood and Directed Audio stuff though, with some other car stuff

ok thanks gus for all the help, i will tell you this for my ground i drilled a hole through bottom on the spare tire well put my eye hook on my ground wire and bolted it through the hole with a nut and bolt! oh and i grinded all the paint away too!

ok everyone i just went out and test each voice coil one voice coil on each sub reads about 4 ohms and the other one on each sub reads 0-1 ohm so i guess these have been toast for a while now!
owell i wanted a temp fix till i get new ones thats all!

sounds like a blown coil.
Running 1 VC on a Dual VC sub will NOT damage the sub. Thats just a bunch of made up BS.
you snooze you lose!
keep working, millions on welfare depend on you!
I agree with that. I don't know how many times I have ran one vc on a duel and nothing bad has ever happened. the onlt thing you need to worry about is the ohms at the amp. Not too wise to run naything but what the amp is made for. LOTS OF SMOKEY SMOKE
GET IN HOLD ON AND SHUT UP!!!

I used to do that with my DVC subs too, nothing bad happened. I just didnt wanna disagree with wsysiwyg or the other audio gurus about it.
I had to run one coil on one sub and 2 coils on the other because they're 6 ohms each (I hate 6 ohm subs...

) to get the most power out of them.
I've always been under the impression that its not good for the sub.. BUT with only one voice coil hooked up on a dual voice coil subwoofer, u will loose about 3db aswell as messing up the theill smalls for the sub. So if u dont acount for any of that it can sound like crap.
mine actually seem louder then ever before unless i just havent heard them in awhile they were wired in 2 ohm and bad for my amp but i rewired them for 8 ohms and my amp can handle 4-8 ohm's
now i just need a external cd changer or a MP3 player so my cd's dont skip
if you relocate your headunit like i did i recommend a external audio source
if anyone wants to know what i mean just ask its almost done so i will show pictures!
