Hey gang I need help, I bought a 2000 cavalier today for a beater and the radio was gone from it. My girl gave me her stock radio from her 2000 Z24 and once it was installed the screen says "LOCKED" how in the hell do you unlock the 2k radio?!

Bring on the "search" comments please

FAQ

Not the sticky... the actual FAQ in the Library.

Basically, take it to a dealer... there is NO other way.

I say buy a beater deck for the 2000 beater.. Sony deck would do just fine if you just need something to listen to. (unless you plan on a big upgrade, then fork the dough for a nice deck)

I checked with all 3 dealers that we have here in Fresno. All of them want $95.00 to unlock it

When they unlocked mine on my 98 they didn't charge me a dime and they gave me the code in case I ever needed to do it again.

The 98 does not have RDS

So, take them just the radio? Or the radio in the car? I'm planning on buying a Sunfire deck for my car (Luckily for me, I have a friend who's a mechanic at a Pontiac dealership ) and I don't want to have to install a stereo in the parking lot

Radio in the car, Grab the RPO code off the case before you install it. It should start with the letter U and be three long... UP0, UQ3, UN1, etc..

Select that RPO code with the Tech 2, and you're good to go.

MEGAMAN.. What difference does it make whether the radio has RDS or not. RDS does not have anything to do with THEFTLOCK. The 2000+ radios have to do with the new class 2 systems. Since he is getting a radio from a different car, it will need to be reprogrammed to his VIN. It will not work until his VIN is entered into the radio.
John, correct me if I am wrong.
The 98 that Driftincavy mentioned is not a class 2 system and some dealerships would unlock them for free since no equipment would have to be hooked up to them. A couple of button pushes by a service person and a quick phone call would get the master unlock code. I know since that is what the dealership did for me one time when for no reason, my radio locked up on me. I too have the master code for my radio.

Yup... RDS is a radio feature. Nothing to do with theftlock, passlock, airbags, etc. Think of it as an add-on... kinda like AM.. FM... FM2.. AM Stereo (which never made it...)... RDS... heh

All 2000+ radios in the J-body cars have theftlock in the Class 2 wiring. All of them.

95-99 are not Class 2... so not an issue. You can get the master unlock code yourself... search Google and you will find the answers

In a non RDS you are able to hold down buttons 2 & 3 or 1 & 4 to get a code to unlock the radio. You cannot do that with the RDS deck.
