Daytona Blue, Cavalier Coupe, 2.2L I4OHV
bs! og to a best buy and get the kit
Yeah it is true the wiring harness for that car is between $120-$150 because most new GM vehicles are equipped with what they call the data bus system, the harness actually allows all of the fact equip to still operate as if the fact radio is still in the vehicle. The main thing the harness does is keep the dinging you hear when the door is opened, coming out of the drivers side door speaker, still operable. You can "Ghetto rig" it to get the radio to work by using the regular GM harness (The one with 4 little rectangular plugs in one) and running a acc wire, i believe, to the radio but your not going to hear the dinging anymore and its not the best way to go. The car companies are trying to make it harder and harder to change anything to aftermarket but there is always a way around it.
The wiring harness should have a little black box on it.
The model number through Metra is GMOS01

Hope this helps
Good Luck,
Josh
yea i have no dinging .. and i leave my lights on all the time..
using the regular harness that isnt special for the door chime function is not in any way "ghetto", its just more cost effective, if you dont mind losing the annoying noise that is there to remind you of things u should already remember on your own, theres no reason to buy a retardedly expensive harness...get the cheap harness, adapter plate, might have to trim a lil plastic depending on depth of your new head unit, and install it, if you MUST have the ding to say "hey dipshlt, your lights are on" then spend the extra, i just dont see the point
On the other hand....you have other fingers.
i had lots of toys when i was young.slinky,etc.but once i found my penis, that was all she wrote
Using the "regular" rectangular harness that does not integrate the door chime is not just a plug and play install, you will have to run an ignition wire and there is a possibility that you may run into electrical probs. Yeah the part is expensive and if you want to take the cheap way out of it go ahead, but if it were my car I would do it the correct way. I dont see how its not ghetto when you have to start running wires to get the harness thats not for that vehicle to work and your losing factory options as well as risking electrical probs.

stfu...you don't know what you're talking about. i used a harness for a 2000 tracker in my 02 cavy. i plugged the tracker harness into my factory harness, hooked the wires to my new radio, ran ONE wire to the ignition, and it was a done deal. i didn't have to run a bunch wires all over the place and its not ghetto.
its cheaper by about 140 bucks, i didn't have to run my factory radio to my trunk (thats ghetto if you ask me), and i've never had an electrical problem is 4 years.
GO PATS!!!

no, your WRONG. flat out, completely, WRONG.
the only thing you will lose is chimes. use a harness from a 2000 chevy tracker. plus right in. use a fuse tap for the switched 12v source. i have a full idiot-proof how-to guide available if you'd like a copy, email me, ill forward it to you with all the photots, shows you exactly where all the bolts are.

i guess you need to put your helmet back on and go back to licking the windows on the short bus if you can fuk up your cars electrical system by running one wire to a switched power source...
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

ok now im all confused....
my friend doesnt wanna pay 150 for a wiring harness.....
so what can she do?
isnt there other wiring harnesses we can buy at a fraction of the cost?
Daytona Blue, Cavalier Coupe, 2.2L I4OHV
go to circuit city and tell them you want a harness for a 2000 tracker.
bring the harness home. it should plug directly into your factory harness. hook the wires from the tracker harness up to the new stereo.
then run the ignition wire on the NEW stereo to the fuse box on the drivers side of the car under the dash. you need to tap in to a fuse that is ONLY on when the key is turned on. most people use the wiper fuse.
that should be it.
the harness should cost no more than 20 bucks. she WILL lose her door chimes (idiot bells) AND the ability to turn the key backwards to listen to the radio without the car on. thats it.
GO PATS!!!
Probly gonna have to go to Best Buy since Canada doesn't have Circuit City. But yeah just tell them you want the reguler harness adaptor, it's a universal plug for most new GM vehicles, but it is different than the plug for pre 2000 cars.

Nobody at Bestbuy or Futureshop will sell you the harness because they are idiots... and they will point you out to the 95-99 Harness or they'll telll you need the 200$ harness. Personally if I wanted to buy the harness id go to Crappy Tire or Walmart.
I just finished an install like this in a friends sunfire and we spent 28$ for everything at Walmart thats with 15% tax.
jacob, its already been said, if he simply asks for a 2000 tracker harness, hes set

just don't make the mistake of telling them its for a cavalier...
GO PATS!!!
No man the bestbuy or futureshop won't sell you any of the harnesses besides the generic ones like 88-up for GM. I asked the guy if I can buy the harness they just pointed me to the generics that they had on the wall. The other ones are in the garage.
Just buy it at Walmart or Crappy Tire no BS.
damn, your best buy sucks. i just walked into the roadshop (or whatever best buy calls their audio install bay) and asked them for one...no questions asked.
GO PATS!!!
ok...i ordered a Scosche GM05 Car Stereo Wiring Harness that is for 2000-UP Chevrolet Metro / Prizm / Tracker / Pontiac Montana cars....i read on this site that a gm05 wiring harness will work for a 2002 cavy but i just wanted to know what extra stuff do i have to do to install this harness since it isnt even made for my car becuz i really dont want to pay $120 for a wiring harness when i hear that u can do this instead....
did you read this thread nick? it SHOULD be a plug and play with the exception of running an ignition wire from the new stereo to a switched 12V source (wipers, turn signals).
GO PATS!!!
yeah i read it but i just wanted to make sure cuz i didnt know if i had to do anything special with the kind of wiring harness that i bought...thx for helpin though...
its really easy. its a lot more intimidating because of all the rumors, but you can trust most of us. nobody here wants to screw up anyone else's car with bad advice...
GO PATS!!!
