Looking at new sub...
Saturday, June 24, 2006 1:02 PM
Right now I have an old 12" JBL GT120. Thing still sounds great but I've got a HiFonics BX1500D amp running 500rms@4ohms to it. I've been wanting to get a better sub, either single 2ohm VC or dual 4ohm to run 1000rms@2ohms from the amp. I like the Alpine Type -R and Kappa but according to the specs, they'll be over powered by the amp. I want a good SQ sub, just louder than what I have now. What about Audiobahn AW1206T for SQ? Listen MOSTly to rock, but everything else too. Any suggestions?

I have an older Kappa being thrown 500 from an xtant x1000.1 and no issues.

no experience with the type r's

type-r's are good and they'll prolly hold the power fine if u have it tuned right but to be safe, I would personnaly go the type-x with a 1000 watt rms. I've heard that it's a great SQ sub and it's the sub i'm gonna be going with powered by an alpine mrd-m1005 amp.
Thats if you wana go with alpine. If you want some other suggestions, I personally like JL subs too. I don't know enough about them to give u model numbers and such, but somebody else most likely will.

No experiences with the Audiobahn? I figured it wouldn't have as good SQ. The Alpine Type-X is an idea, honestly I didn't even know they had an Type-X line. A little pricey for me, but most others will probably be just as expensive or more I guess.

Audiobahn is crap, nothing they make has comparable SQ to what u can get from a better company at a similar price.
anyway... whats ur price range? u leaning more into SQ or SPL? thse are 2 major questions to answer before we can give you any big recomendations...
depending on what your price range is, and because im a HUGE SQ fan, i will throw out a couple ideas...
JL W3v2(although 1k watts rms will be a bit much for a w3, great sq)
JL W6v2(would be my first choice of SQ sub if u can afford one or 2 of em!)[and 1k watts might be a bit much, if u are looking to take full advantage of the 1k watts]
ID IDQ (1k watts is still a bit much)
ID IDMAX (INSANE SQ SUB)

so as you may have noticed, putting 1000 watts to a single sub, and keeping the subs cost down will be pretty hard....so give us a price range

Yeah I know JL will do the SQ trick, but they are definitely pricey. Basically looking to spend as little as possible and fulfill the requirements- Handle the power of the amp, good SQ (more so than SPL anyways), and not $5-600. And I didn't want a REAL bulky system, that's why I was looking into one sub, but I suppose two 12's if I have to, to handle the power. Anymore suggestions welcome. The type-X is a concideration...

better SQ and better price than the X....eD 13Ov2.....ID IDMAX...

if ur looking for all out SQ sub that will get plenty loud, and handle plenty of power... get an IDMAX, in a ported box tuned low...

I didn't even look at the IDMAX. It sounds like it might be a winner, in the 12" 4ohm DVC model. Checked SOunddomain it's like $360, I'll keep looking for a better price. Any suggestions? Thanks for throwing this one at me by the way!

-IF you could Find one, I would say an Adire Koda.....

"Adire Koda
"Adire Brahma (Little pricey, but worth every penny)

-I myself will rpobably be picking up a Adire Shiva, my dad is using one right now for his Home Audio setup, it is like an Ultimate SQ Driver, BUT powerhandling is limited, I would not throw anymore then 200 at it.

*** JL suggestions are also fantastic options as well, just keep yourself open to anything from someone with a bit of knowledge here, they will put you on the right road.

if u can afford the big dogs, Short Hand is dead on suggesting the Brahma...also, see if u can find an older RE XXX...the new ones are quite pricey, and definately will give u a run for your money trying to build a proper box big enough and affording enough power for it lol

the type R will handle 1000 watts rms no problem ask wwysig about his friend that runs 1000 watts rms to it.

as long as you set the amp correctly you will be fine.

also from what i have read the type x is more for spl that means u do not get as good of quality with as you with the type R. Also with the Type R in some cases i remember reading the Type R out hit the Type X.

ummm no the Type-X is by far geared to SQ, and the Type-R is a decent all around woofer, but will not compair with the other mentioned subs in SQ at all..... I dont see either of those Alpine's competing with ANY of the previously suggested subs

You can find used RE SE series on e-bay fairly cheap too. Dosent matter if they are blown either cause RE can recone them for pretty cheap.

I'm just waiting to spy me another SE10 or two

Yeah...just search e-bay. They have online dealers there now...just no warranty. But they have MUCH cheaper prices than most other dealers.

I know there are a few SE12's on there right now.
