Changing Manufacturer Head Units

If I were to change my Pioneer head unit to, say, a Panasonic head unit, would it be necessary for me to change the wiring harness I am currently using for the Pioneer deck? Or would it be a simple swap, as if upgrading from Pioneer deck to another Pioneer deck?

Also, would there be any new wiring necessary if upgrading from a regular deck to one that includes video playback, e.g. one with a larger screen, and not your standard size deck.

Maybe a dumb question but I couldn't find anything and just thought I would ask! Thanks everyone

now i'm not 100% sure if this will work with your models... but I purchased a pioneer mp3 deck for my sunbird about 3 years ago.... a year ago the faceplate went all screwy and was covered under warantee through the place i purchased the deck... anyways it was cheaper to get me a new deck and my new pioneer simply plugged right in using the same wire harness... but i would check first to make sure.... as for the addition of video etc.. I would imagine the wire harness might change a bit... not 100% sure about that one though...

yep you got it McManus...when i bought the car it had a pioneer deck in it already, and he wanted it back when he sold the car to me so all i did was upgrade with another pioneer deck and it was simple plug'n'play....just not sure about changing from pioneer to another make still

Changing from Pioneer to another make will mean changing the harness that plugs into the deck, yes. The manufacturers in most cases don't even use the same connectors, so a Pioneer harness may not necessarily plug into any other deck, let alone work. From what I know about the video decks and decks with video capabilities, the harness shouldn't change. The harness is meant to interface with basically 4 things: Constant Power, Switching Power, Ground, and the speakers. Video stuff should be done internally to the deck. Where you might need additional wiring is if you're hooking up external displays, say headrest monitors.

pioneer to pioneer no problem....go a diff brand and you need a new harness. In a "TV" the only extra connection is the parking brake wire which in most cases can be bypassed

the wiring harness is based off your car, not the type of deck you use, the part of the harness that attaches to the deck is just wiring, so you'd undo the wiring from the old radio and then wire up the wires from your new headunit to the old harness.
