Seriously, what is wrong with these things? I've put three in my J's and now it looks like I'm gonna have to put a fourth one in. It has been the same symptom, too. They will work flawlessly for around a year and then eventually will not turn on my low beams when turned to that position. If I wiggle the rotating switch I can sometimes get the headlights to come on but they usually shut off by themselves after a short period of time.
Why do these things do this? IIRC they aren't that cheap either and I'm really getting tired of buying them just for them to go bad so quickly.
I'm on my third one too, I'm just gonna wire a Relay so that when I turn on my parking lights my headlights come on. Only had this problem with my 02, it only has 64,000miles
My 03 has near 100,000 miles and no problems from that one.

Are you using headlight bulbs other than stock ( higher wattage, etc)
these will draw a greater amperage thru the switch causing shorter life

How hard can you be on a rotating switch? I haven't even begun to wear off the labels of this latest one...

Just stock replacements. But I don't think that is the cause because they still work, its just the switch seems to have a difficult time making a good connection.
Odd. I'm also on my original switch. The labels are worn clean off. My DRL function stopped working on its own, but I like the idea of it. Because of this, I turn on my headlights on and off every time I get in and leave the car -- at least 4 times a day. This has gone on for the last three years. Maybe the switches last longer if you use them more?

That is definitely plausible seeing as how these things are filled with grease and not using them as much would allow dust and dirt to accumulate on the grease which then could obstruct the path of current when it is being used.
I just pulled it out and tore it apart and cleaned the part that controls the headlights and it appears to be working for now.
hmmm........... Might have to give that a try. If I slightly pull mine back, like an 1/8" it works if I hold it there. This is the same thing that has happened in the past.
Yea, thats what was happening with mine. I tried to take my previous one apart and clean it but it kinda exploded and I couldn't figure out how to get it back together. Just be careful taking it apart.
