OK, bought a 2003 Cav coupe with basic am/fm/cd that was not working (I knew it and dealer cut $$$ off). Installed a Pioneer Stereo/CD unit using the proper Metra Interface harness. Everything works including chime, but NO SOUND through speakers. When I turn the unit on the display works as it should and cd's go in and eject as it should. I'm now wondering if one of the speakers is shorted out. Only have front door speakers, none in back yet. All wires are soldered and heat shrinked. Would a short in a speaker wire cause no sound through both? Don't even get static.
All wires are connected properly; I've done this many times.
Can't call Crutchfield till late tommorrow.
Any input???

If you have a meter check the speaker outputs on the back of the hu (ac voltage) then check it at the speaker locations. Also might want to check if your Hu's internal amp can be disabled.
I do not think the internal amp can be disabaled.
Initially I tried hooking up a Pioneer DEH-P47DH which is the oversize face unit for older GM (Buick Roadmaster). When I traded Buick I removed the Pioneer to put in the Cav. It didn't fit the dash, BUT I was able to hook it up and the same thing happened--everything on the display worked but no sound. Have a buyer for the 47DH, so I went to Crutchfield and bought a Pioneer DEH-P3900MP along with the Metra Interface. Everything works but NO sound from either of the front speakers.
Tommorow I'll pull the door panels and check speaker connections.

Also, I'm thinking it has to be the speakers. The headunit display works perfectly so I know power is getting to it and it's grounded via the harness.
If one speaker is not connected right or is shorting out would that cause both speakers not to work?
Can't find anything in library/sticky's pertaining to this.

Turned out to be a short in right front speaker wire. Pioneer tech told me that if any wire going to any speaker has a bad connection/short the internal amp. shuts off to "save" itself--no power to any speaker, but the display will work as normal.

Did you find the problem bu taking the door panels off, or just from what the tech said?

I pulled door panels off, Tech advised to disconnect one speaker at a time, and when bad one was disconnected, good one would work. I found a spot on right door speaker wire where it goes up from speaker and feeds through door, through hole and than down into the door feed into body. Fixed wire and rubber grommet into hole. Everything works perfectly.
