stereo wiring problems
Sunday, March 02, 2008 12:55 PM
well i started wiring my cd player for my 2000 cavalier, and now i'm having some problems and i dont know whats causing them.

i bought the wiring harness, connected all the wires, did the fuse tap for the switched power, hooked the harness into my cd player and its not getting any power. i checked my ground, and thats not the problem. i checked the fuse on the back of the player and its fine. i know the cd player works because i just took it out of my dodge dakota and it was working fine. any ideas on what my problem is?

double check your wires.....test for power on your yellow and red wires, and double check your ground. check the fuse on the radio after that buy a another radio if all checks out! =P

i know the cd player is fine, it was working in my truck when i took it out.

it shouldn't be a ground issue, i wired it to the ground wire in the wiring harness and also wired it to a bolt in the dash. and the stock radio worked when i took it outta the cav too, so i'm completely confused.

if you have a multimeter, check to make sure that your getting a good 12 volt off the constant power, i had mine break further up in the harness and had to run a new one to my steering column if that checks out you may have possibly shorted something while taking it out of your truck

Yeah take a voltmeter the wires to make sure the harness is getting power. Also, is you're battery unhooked?

^ lol damnit no the battery's not unhooked... i'll take a voltometer to it tomorrow and see if i can get it figured out. im sick of driving the car around with the dash in pieces.

I just got done with having the same problems and from what you've told us, everything should be connected correctly... all I can think of is a connector came loose or an issue with your wires...

the only thing i can think of, besides a bad wiring harness possibly, is that there were 2 orange wires from the harness that didnt match anything... they were for the dimmer and for illumination. i connected them to the switched power. is that right?

No.
The orange wires are for the lights on your cd player to work like factory lights dimming when the headlights come on, or dimming with your dimmer switch in the car. If I remember correctly they are suppose to be negative and you are putting positive to them now.

but the wires dont come from the cd player's wiring harness, they're on the wiring harness that plugs into the stock harness. i thought they were for the hvac lights and for my interior lights and dimmer.

no if your headunit or wiring harness have extra wires that do not match up exactly dont connect them to anything, unless your positive on what they do. otherwise you could very well short something and cause some serious problems in the car

Save yourself a lot of headaches. JUST wire up 12V constant, Ground and Igntion. Plug the harness in and check if it works. Then start adding the other wires.

In our cars you'll need to connect these wire, nothing else (assuming you bought a harness adaptor)

green, green/black - rear left speakers +/-
purple, purple/black - rear right speakers +/-
white, white/black - front left speakers +/-
gray, gray/black - front right speakers +/-
yellow - 12V always on
black - chassis ground
red - Accessory, on with key
orange - illumination (ONLY IF DECK SUPPORTS IT)

everything else can be left cut so that it isn't connected to anything and then taped to avoid shorts.

i agree except for the orange wire...i wouldn't touch it if i were you....if you connect it incorrectly you could blow a fuse or worse
