Hey, lurked here a bit before, first time posting though
Nice site BTW
Friend has a 98 cavalier and he's looking to get the stereo upgraded, Speakers would be purchased used, but were at a loss for a deck. He'd prefer one without need for an external amp because he wants it to just replace the old one and not be too extravagant (Just a sub being the only extra piece, just in the trunk. )
Any recommendations? 1998 cavalier incase the thread name gets cut off
Oh, an install guide would be cool if there are any on here, don't have time to look right now <_< I can do the install.
Thanks
What is the budget?
The sub would need to have an external amp to run it. The speakers..you could try a coaxial one which would be run off the HU.
The stock ones are 4x6 in the front but most put a component set whihc are 6.5 There should be sticky on here on making adapters for the 6.5
Just go to WalMart and buy the wiring harness and install kit, plus a Pioneer cd player and call it a day. Judging by your age, and the comments about used speakers, I'm guessing the budget is a low one. I have owned 4 Pioneer decks and never had a problem with any of them.
There are instructions for disassembling the dash in the Library.
Do not chop out your factory plug or I will take away your birthday and lash you with a wet noodle.

I figure we'll need a harness of course, more looking for part suggestions and where to get them
I realized I was a complete moron and that he Definitely needs an amp for the sub, we're passing on that for a few weeks
Yea, the budget is preeeetttyyyy low... Looking at sub 100 HU's and used drivers <_< Rear speakers are the first to go, fronts need new door wiring as their shot and don't work at all right now...
Oh yeah, In Canada as well... Can get some stuff on close out at the futureshop near here as well... <_<
You can always get an discontinued model Pioneer or JVC head unit for under $100 at Best Buy or something. I have used both JVC and Pioneer in the past and recommend either. If you did ever decide to wait a little longer and spring for a nicer deck, I would.

The edit button is only available to premium members. As for a bay adapter, I'd go with a Metra 99-3300. I installed one in my Cav and the flushness is so much better than the one that sticks out a few inches. That deck is decent but I'd stay away from Sony Xplod. Try to find something from Pioneer, Clarion, etc.
Sony makes great entry level decks if all you want is something basic go with a Sony or pioneer
My buddy has the similar deck to that one in his work truck and works awesome with no problems and he loves the usb function
