i got my step dad a radio for his 04 from a guy i work with because he didn't like the after market radio in his car but after i installed it of course it came up locked. now does this have to go to the dealer to be unlocked? My friend has a shop and has a big 6000 dollar matco scan tool but i am not sure if it will relearn the bcm to the new radio or not. and if so do i need the code from the radio?
It can only be unlocked using a tech2..... so unless your friends shop has a tech2 you'll have to goto the dealer... it's also helpful to have the vin of the donor vehicle...
Actualy you have to give the dealer the code for the radio and they have to call it in to get the unlock code. It will be a two 3 digit numbers. I forget how to retrieve them though. No tech II is needed.

all radios 01+ and some of the 00's are only unlocked via tech2.... there is no codes for these.... any radio that's 00 or older gives you 2 three digit numbers.... however the newer radios incorporate RDS which locks the stereos to a specific vin... if the BCM sends the stereo a different vin it will lock... trust me I went through all this hastle.. but now i'm a happy 2001 sunfire owner with a 2005 monsoon mp3 player out of a grand am in my car...
i can get the vin number from the donor vehicle no problem. so that is all i will need to have the radio reset to the new vehicle? no codes need to be retrieved? the radio came on for a split second then went to locked. i assume it locked after receiving the ''foreign'' vin number from the bcm? thanks for the help so far everyone.
that should be all you need.. when I had mine done the guy didn't really know what to do... so he just plugged in the tech 2..... turned on the radio... it read locked... then he reset the radio using the tech 2 and it worked.... never had a problem since... i've had my battery unhooked for numerous hours... hooked it back up and the radio still works 100%...
^That is what you have to do... I would do that all the time if someone came into the drive and the techs where busy. Some dealers don't charge for something that simple, and should be done in the lane very fast. With dealers being so slow they might charge you a little.
If the dealer asks you for the VIN of the vehicle it came out of.. they're probably trying to ascertain if it's a stolen radio or not (though, who would steal a stock radio? C'mon...). There is no way for them to tell what the old VIN is, and it's not needed to unlock the old radio.
All GM does, when they "unlock" the radio, is reflash the BCM to re-sync with the radio. Same thing if you need to reflash stock keyless remotes, you're just putting the BCM into program mode. (In fact, if you need that done too... bring 'em with you when you get the radio reflashed... it's under the same set of menus on the Tech 2!)
...j
ive had 3 different 00+ radios and only 1 of them needed to be unlocked....otherwise, go for a tech 2....only way sorry
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
