Mixing subs (don't kill me)
Sunday, January 04, 2009 4:18 PM
Hey guys I just picked up an older malibu and the kid had a power acoustik 15" in their that was wired all @!#$ up, in a home built, sealed, box facing the floor. I dunno what kind of amp he had pushing it but it sounded alright when I rewired it. (he had the power wire running with all the other wires) I have my JL W7 12" with the JL slash 1000 mono blah blah. But I notice when I'm listening to hip hop the sub will hit the real low notes but it will dumb out and distort (quiet down)with the higher bass notes and that's lame. My question is this : Can I get a crossover or something and tune the 15" to hit the higher notes louder and leave the lower notes for the 12"? or something I can do to improve the range of bass with my sub/s.

Haha I read the forum post where you guys ripped that kyle kid a new @!#$ lol I read the second page 2 just cause it was funny. Didn't tell mewhat I wanted to know though, the forum. Why won't it work?? I know I should just get another jl w7 but ya now the cost and all. What about pairing the 12 with a 10 or an 8? I thought that is what crossovers were for.

first off if you wanted to go with dual subs you'd want that 15 playing the low frequencies, not the 12. and the reason of a crossover is to keep a speaker playing freuencies it can handle. both the 12 and the 15 are basically meant to play the same frequencies. short answer on why its a waste is basically to gain output you want both speakers playing the same signal. when both subs are playing the same frequency the output is increased, now if you have two diffrent subs that are playing, the responce on both subs wont be the same so youlle have one sub hitting say 45hz and the other playing at 47hz and the output doesn increase. it basically wont give you the benifit of two subs matched up. it wont sound as good as two subs matched up. so your basically getting no good benefit for having two subs. more basic example. say you have two people who need to push a cart filled with large rocks. the first person is going 1,2,3 push and pushing, then stops then does it again. well the other guy is going 1 push then stops. so you dont have both people pushing at the same time so you cant hardly push that cart as good as it can. where as with two of the same subs is like having two people pushing the cart at the exact same time. output is increased.

Right I get that, I wasn't going for "more" output I was going more for a larger range in frequencies, and the 15 hits a different range for whatever reason. Theyboth hit the notes they want to hit hard enough; but neither of them hit the whole range of notes and I know my w7 is tuned right.

did you check your low pass filter on the amp? i could be set too low for the w7 to the point where its not getting those higher frequencies.

It could also be the box that its in, why not build a new one? or build one for your JL?

is your w7 in a ported box? if so it will have a decreased output at higher frequencies where your 15 does not because sealed boxes have a much flatter frequency response curve

"I did it because I wanted to see what it would look like. You should be greatful that I even told you that it would look good. If your to dumb to use photoshop and change the color of your own car then you don't need to see it changed. I'm not going to give my work away. I'll sell the pic to you though for $15."-Adam Kalin

Not if you build the ported box properly. A sub being in a ported box will NOT decrease it's output at higher frequencies if you know what you are doing. This is thread 2 I have read today where you talk out your ass for no good reason in the Audio forum.

Yeah STFU Chris! lol The box is built for the jl specs and I will check the low frequency pass. I think the power wire I'm running is just to small because I'm a retard. It's a 4 guage and kinetics power cell so I think I should upgrade to an aught guage maybe??

where is the sub cutting out. what freqencies are you expecting your subs to play up to? your saying higher frequencies, whats higher 50hz? 75hz? 150hz?

I would have to figure that out, don't kno off the top of my head. Heres an example, my friend has a shtty inverted 15 and it plays thebass from the song white gurls by e-40 and lil wayne way ouder than my w7, but when I play I feel like dying it pounds like think it should. Once again might be the damn power wire.

But it will if its tuned at 22hz. Its getting fixed when the box is pulled for carpet when my car goes to the body shop for my big ugly dent.

If youre saying what I think you are. My 15 will play White Girl loud and hit nice on the lows but when it hits the high part there isnt much there which is because of my box which is tuned waaaaay to low. How low is your box tuned? Sounds like its just hitting the bottom of the tune. But maybe someone can back me up. Just fo sho. Or maybe I'm wrong. Or the song may be clipped. If youre using the same one for all of your bass.

thats why he said properly built lol. your box would be fine for a home theater but for music it really is nonsensical

another factor is just the size of the car itself can cause a huge diffrence in output of frequencies. maybe the song that your friends system hits really hard on is the right frequency for that guys car and not yours. the same sub in the same box with the same power in two diffrent sized cars is going to sound and play diffrently.

After looking at everythin I think it may be the box, I built the box for the w7 custom specs but then I cut it to fit under a rear dash in my monte I forgot I cut it a little, Are there any suggestions for a single jlw7?? Ported/not etc.
