ok its going to be a single fi audio BTL 12" on an AQ3500, in one of the following enclosures:
so first here is the top gap box that i design its port is 11.25 high x 3.75 wide x 32" long and the interior volume is 2.4 cu ft. it will leave a gap of about 3.5" by around 20-23 inches long on the top. it also features a 2x4" on the back of the box for support as i couldnt get a support inside the box...
next is the side gap box. its port is 14.5 high x 2.875 wide x 32" long. it has 2.46 cu ft internally and will leave about a 8-9"" gap by 10-15 inches tall (angled sides) on the driver side. it also has a nicley rounded edge for that side of the box, i would assume it would help with flow.
now i need to know which way would it be better to do this, a top gap for air to flow in or a side gap for air to flow in? im thinking top gap beacue then the waves can just flow right off the trunk over the box into the cabin, but i dont really know.... i need some help here. i think im giong to build both boxes just to find out. but i want to here your guy's opinions.

Someone draw him a picture in paint with a 4 inch round port please.
Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.
Thats what i do.
has anyone ever taught you that sometimes simpler is better anton? haha
nope. im going to kerf my next box. i was thinking more or less the idea of having a gap for air/waves to go over the box or on the side of the box.
also these boxes are going to be awesome! you cant tell me that any of pound that sound builds arent amazing!
check this one out.
heres more. just look at how awesome these are!
you cant tell me it wouldnt be amazing to do that... or maybe we should all just buy aero ports like every one else.... im sorry but id rather stick out like a sore thumb at comps then be a cookie cutter competetor.

It just seems needlessly difficult yo me but im just a newb I guess.............

it will be difficlt but in the long run it will definatly be benificial. im doing it for the same reason people use aero ports, its because its flared, gives it a smooth flow, and from what i know better flow equals more spl. and thats why im asking this question.

how much more SPL? Like .2 dB more? Ive never heard of anyone getting any huge gains based on rounded ports.
If you got the time to do it go for it, but not really necessary in this application. very nice plan for a box just to much wasted time.
Oh ya and cant view SSA without an account. I may be registeresd there i dont remember. But anyways tthats just for when you link an SSA thread again.

good to know. definatly noted. thanks.

Don't forget guys, Anton knows everything about box building and car audio. He has Alpine coming to him for box designs.

no i dont have alpine coming to me for box design. i disagree with alpines box design yes. and if i knew everything about car audio why would i be asking this question? no one really seems to know on the 2 forums that i posted this on so i think im just going to build both and find out for my self. but if anyone does now the answer to my question. please post.

why don't you ask this question on a useful forum like Termpro, where real competitors actually post? a few people there have built loud cavaliers, like Steve Sears.
IMO, the only way to know is to build both, because there are differences between j-bodies, even the same age and model. even if I told you what is loudest (so far) in my car, chances are good that it may not be the best for yours.
but for someone like me running a 15 (ie box is the height of the seat opening), narrower is better. but I run external aeros.

I've seen friends gain 1.5db+ switching from large slot ports to aeros with 1/3 the port area (even when they used PVC to round the edges of the slot). huge gains aren't guaranteed, but I've yet to see someone lose by going to aeroports.

ask yourself WHY competitors use aeros. they don't do it to be like everyone else. here's a hint - they win with them.
ask world finalist street class competitors how many boxes they build in a season trying to get louder. or how many tweaks they've had to do to their boxes, including tuning, resin, etc. it's 10000x easier to experiment, test, tune and tweak an aeroported box. it's a MASSIVE competitive advantage. not to mention the gains seen on the meter. and yes, I've seen aeros gain over kerfed ports
kerfed/flared slot boxes have been used forever, it's not a recent phenomenon in competition. a few hardcores still use them in street a/b/c, but the vast majority of the loudest street class guys go aero.
calling aeroported boxes "cookie cutter" is bloody ignorant. people use them because they work, and work extremely well.

If round ports truly sucked, I wouldn't be having plans to be using a 10 inch round port. Seriously dude, you get butt-hurt every time we tell you that you're doing something wrong, or show you the right way. I'm still waiting for the day for your balls to drop and you finally accept some of this advice we're giving you.

Well Alpine does say I should tune to 27 hz................
