Anton Miller's Kerfed Box Build Thread

Hi All,

A while back I had come up 2 designs to build for my 12" BTL. CLick here for topic on the box design
This next thing is quoted from the topic on the box designing.

Quote:

ok so i think im just going to build box boxes and see which one perfroms better and then report back here when the results are done. so ive design up 2 boxes both tune to 34 hz with about the same port area. and they box have almost the same interior volum they are off by about .06 cu ft (like nothing).

so first here is the top gap box that i design its port is 11.25 high x 3.75 wide x 32" long and the interior volume is 2.4 cu ft. it will leave a gap of about 3.5" by around 20-23 inches long on the top. it also features a 2x4" on the back of the box for support as i couldnt get a support inside the box...

next is the side gap box. its port is 14.5 high x 2.875 wide x 32" long. it has 2.46 cu ft internally and will leave about a 8-9"" gap by 10-15 inches tall (angled sides) on the driver side. it also has a nicley rounded edge for that side of the box, i would assume it would help with flow.

please all comments and concerns welcome i just want to do it right.

so this past week we started the build. pics below.

so we started by trial and error on the kerfing. failures are below.

then we finally got it right. we did .25" spacing for 4 inches, it should be a total of 17 cuts. and we also left about 1/32" of wood left. very thin.

so after we got that right we finally started cutting the kerf for the other boards.

we then ran into a snag with the paint can. when we opened it up it was broken. so since its easier to paint the pieces when they are not assembled on the box. we had to make do.

here are some quick mock ups of what it will look like.

now some assembly shots.

more to come. this is as far as we got. next week end like not this up coming, but the one after they should be done.

i know nothing about this challenge???

but these boxes are designed for daily use first, competition second. they are tuned to 34 hz. if i were to build a burp box i would tune to at least 40 hz and fire it forward. but seriously whats this trunked j challenge thing??

i would get spanked by people like ian cutting (not sure on last name but its close) and so on. i only feel like doing a single 12". might do 3 10"s later in life. but i wanna see how far i can go with this.

also i got my SAZ-3000

Why a 3k for one 12? Just seems overkill if your arent building a burp box. Those things are huge. I remember the first time I saw one It looked like 3 of my amps sitting in a row. Which I guess makes sense. Hahahha

Its a friendly competition and Im just dicking with you. Im shooting for 145 this spring. I think we're the only two with trunked cars doing SPL on here. But I could be wrong.

im shooting for around 150 outlaw. 147-148 legal. it might happen..... most likely ill be getting the 148 outlaw and a 146-147 legal. i know 147 legal should happen when double power and with a much more efficient sub and box.

and the btl will take the abuse all day long..... hopfully..... lol but we will see.

and the amp weighs like 25 lbs. just insane!

I'm usually a dick to you Anton, for obvious reasons, but that looks good. Make sure you resin the piss out of those corners.

Your car may do 13 sec @ 103 mph, but my car does 146db @ 35 hz.

if you look at the pics again. you can see i have a substantially bigger gap between my ribs that that one does, so i dont think it would be necessary. that is good thinking tho...

UPDATE

we ran into some issues with the fiberglass not drying fast enough this week end. i think it was a combination of not enough hardener/ not enough heat, the room we were working in wasnt heated and the temp outside was around 12 degrees. so im guessing the room was about 40-50 degrees. not hot enough for glassing. any ways on to the progress...

yea I forgot to clean out the paint dust from spray painting it before fiberglassing. thats why the black paint is all smeared everywhere.

put the fan on the other box in the background trying to get it to dry faster. it was really close to dry sunday at about noon and i was debating weather or not to put on the last port edge. but i really just didnt want to put glue on wet fiberglass. just didnt sound like a good idea.

after sniffing fiberglass fumes all day and about a half bottle of captain in us we had forgotten to take more pics. but we did get the full curved piece fully screwed and glued in and we also put the first layer of fiberglass on it. we also dumped a @!#$ ton of fiberglass down the kerf grooves on it.

every time the fiber glass would start to get hard to work with we just dumped it down the kerf slots. lol worked out pretty good oyu cant even move the dang thing. its like a rock.

well just like the first update. i have a week of work then i can get back up north and try to finish this thing off!

also if you have any tips on how you mix your fiberglass/hardener please let me know. it seemed like every batch was different and i swear i was mixing it the same. but who knows....

it would be really hard to do an inside corner like that. it would just be really difficult. and this way works out. maybe not as good. but it works just fine.

Ah ok. Seems like it would be just as hard as doing the outside corners but I havent kerfed anything. Maybe on the next boxthough if Im not satisfied with my score.

And get this bish done.
