Hey guys
so i finally got my oil temp and pressure senders hooked up to the oil head. ive got the oil pressure, oil temp, and volt gauges. each one of them need a constant source and a switched source, a ground, and then wire going to the sender. do i need to hook the ground up to the sender ground or can it be anywhere? also, which fuses inside the door are constant and which are switched? does it matter which hole they go in or is either fine? thanks!

Turn signals and cruise control circuits are switched. Most of the others are constant. Just bust out a test light and check.
Pull the fuse out for one of those KO sources mentioned above and see which side lights up with the key on. That is the side you want to tap into. If you tap into the other side, you're pulling more current through that fuse than it's made for. Probably isn't enough to matter, but that's the RIGHT way to do that type of tap.

Well if you tap on the side that you said then youre bypassing any fusing and risking pulling too many amps through unfused wiring.
A valid point. Don't decent gages come with their own fuses? I guess I'd rather have after-market gages fail then my turn signals. Kind of a judgment call for the installer I suppose.

I'd always fuse the gauges regardless. You can get a small fuse block and tap off of one of the main ignition wires and either the battery or the two battery wires that come in at the ignition switch. Ground is any clean bare piece of metal.

or buy an add-a-fuse. replaces the fuse on the board and adds two fuses as well as a power wire coming off that you can fuse.
and a lot of gauges dont come with fuses... no matter how much they cost.
Ive never been a fan of add a fuses. All the ones I got lasted about 2 days and then rattled themselves loose on the insides or something and I would lose power to my circuits.

I put one in for some aftermarket power windows 5 years ago, not a single problem with it.

Maybe Im just getting defective stuff. Ive had mine tapped off the turn signal fuses and dome light fuse for about a year with no problems. I just tapped after the fuse. But my circuits are low amperage, two neon tubes and to power the solenoid on my trunk popper.
