HELP!! Interior Light won't shut off.

HELP!

My interior light in my '99 Cavy z24 won't shut off! I was at work last night and tapped the sunroof from the inside to scare the bugs away. And upon doing this, all 3 ( roof light, and 2 mirror lights) turned on and won't turn off! They stay on weather the car is running or off, with the key in the ignition or not in the ignition, dont matter, they dont shut off. Please Help! They are on as I type this and it is draining my battery.

Thanks. Please post as soon as you can.

Pull the fuse for starters, look where a wire is A - touching body up near the sun roof or B - bad door switch. Seriously, common sense says disconnect the battery first lafff.

Yeah its catch 22 tho. My door locks and truck latch are broken and I cannot open them via a key. Thus I can only get into the car with the remote door opener, so if i disconnect the battery I cannot get into the vehicle to repop the hood if I lock my doors over night. And I don't want to leave my hood open over night. Thank you for the advice tho. I will give that a try today.

Did you move the "dimmer" switch by accident? Took me ten minutes to figure this out myself when I had the dash apart this past weekend. Otherwise pull the fuse.

I dont believe I moved the dimmer switch. The dimmer switch for the dash lights is the same as dome light switch. When I dim dash lights the interior lights stay on, and when I turn the interior light to the on position they remain on aswell.

On second investigation I think the dimmer switch did pull out. Im going to take the dash apart tomorrow and will keep posted. (Sub rattled it out prolly) Thanks for the help.

P.S. When I pulled out the interior light fuse they shut off, but my remote door lock opener is through that fuse . And the only way in the car is with the door lock opener due to subs rattling all the locks out of place. or something cuz they never worked properly. So if battery dies when doors are locked im SOL.

Took the dash apart today and discovered that its not the dimmer switch that is the problem at all. Everything with the harness is fine and in tack, no loose or fraying wires, etc.
Does anyone have any idea how to get the light striker out of the door? is there a special tool? I tried treading it off with no luck. Wanted to get a look at it to see if it has frayed wires. Please get back I need your helps!

This might not be the reason, but I have found that when my ignition key sways in the cylnder lock (due to the other keys weighing it down and some spirited driving), the interior lights activate even while driving. At first I thought it was a faulty door switch, but after repacing both sides, the problem still existed. I would check that to see if thats the culprit. Wiggle your key in the lock, while the in the ON position (in and out) to check. Good luck and let us know what you find.

It pops off. Get a screwdriver behind the edge and pop it off.

Funny though. Even if it were a bad door switch, the BCM turns off my domelights after 10 minutes or so.

If the lights stay on while the car is running it doesn't really sound like a door jamb switch. My lights go off as soon as the ignition is switched. It's a cheap enough part, it might not be a bad place to start. I ended up breaking my door jamb switch while removing it. No big deal as long as you have a replacement. Make sure you get the correct part, parts stores around me only carry switches for 4 doors which are different.

Well I found a way to shut it off when I park it. I have to open the passenger door with the drivers door shut. then lock the doors with the power door locks inside the car not the remote. Then push and hold the door light switch for 2-5 seconds till light turns off. Then release it, the light turns back on but I just shut the door and the light goes off normally.

As far as while driving, it starts off usually, I open the door with the remote, light turns on, stays on while entering. Turns off while doors are closed as intended, and usually turns off after 2 seconds of starting car. But sometimes while driving and hitting a bump or playing the sub to loud makes it turn on. Some times it makes it go like a strobe light. Does this sound like a short?

Yup. I told you Sunday what it's going to be. One or the other.

Did you figure it out? I would say take the headliner down and check the wiring. It sounds like you have a short, and since it happened when you tapped your sunroof I would start there and work my way to other places.

It *could* be the dimmer switch itself... but on all the J-body cars I've ever worked on... it only happened on one so far.. so not likely.

It's most likely a bad door pin switch. If you fiddle with them one at a time, you should be able to figure out which one it is.

A short would blow a fuse. Not likely.

I thought dome lights were negative switched. if the ground was given a constant ground, it would stay on indefinitely.

If he gets the right wire... maybe so.

But the OP's last post talks about the passenger door switch. I'd suspect that.... if fiddling with it made it work, then that's where I'd start checking.

Ignore the alarm and door locks crap until you get the light switch figured out. Who knows how your alarm is wired...

I had a similar problem with my dome light turning on on its own. It was very irritating. Sometimes it was a complete shock to see the dome light turn on while driving.

At first I thought it was my door switches, so I replaced both driver and passenger (Base Coupe). I got the switches from my local Chevy dealership for $10 a piece. That didn't solve the problem though.

I found that it was my heavy keys that were setting it off. Before you do anything else, see if this is whats happening:

This is how I found out what was going on: I got in the car. I closed all the doors. I started the car. (The interior lights should go out) Then I tugged on the ignition key (outward from the column without turning the key). MY DOME LIGHT TURNED ON! So I pushed the ignition key back in. THEN THE DOME LIGHT TURNED OFF. That's where my problem was. I had too many keys on my key ring that weighed down the ignition key to where it was triggering the lights to turn on. I do not know what curcuit that is, but my guess is when you pull your key out, the lights are supposed to turn on. I know mine does.

It happened mostly while turning or on large bumps. Check if that is what's causing your lights to go on. Now I only have my key fob and ignition key. I haven't had my dome lights go on on its own since. Let us know if that is the culprit. Good Luck
