2 or 4ohm sub?
Monday, July 05, 2010 11:01 AM
I'm looking to buy a single shallow mount 12" sub. I've decided on a pioneer premier sub my question is should I get the 2ohm version or the 4ohm version I'm getting a pioneer gm5400t amp and a pioneer box designed for the sub just not sure about which ohm to get. this will be going in my equinox just want a reasonable amount of bass

In such a large vehicle, why so set on a shallow mount? While keeping space is nice, and if that's required, I won't argue... but if you can sacrifice a little more space for a normal 10 or 12 inch sub, you might be happier. Honestly, I don't know your budget, but I am willing to bet I could help get you into better gear all around....

BUT, if you MUST go with that sub and that amp, it's a 2 channel amp, so you would want the sub to optimize it's bridged power which is only stable at 4 ohms. So if the sub is a single coil, get the 4 ohm version, if it's a dual coil, get the 2 ohm version. But again, depending on your budget for sub/amp/box, I could probably get you into much better equipment to begin with.

I want to keep my cargo space. I agree that I would be happier with a full size sub but I was going to mount the box on the back of the seat and the amp under the seat. I'm getting a headunit door speakers and amp/sub/box from www.sonicelectronix.com for like 800

What head unit, amp, sub and speakers and box? I honestly question that price for "everything". Are you looking for just drop in speaker replacements? Honestly, I would post up more info on what you plan to buy from them, your over all budget and goal, I guarantee I can get you into better gear, and maybe someone else would also be able to shed some light on some stuff. I take pride in my knowledge in audio, it's kinda what I have put a TON of hours into doing and learning, if I can help someone get into good gear instead of the typical crap, I will. It makes me feel good knowing that you won't have to upgrade so soon, because you bought right the first time.

Okay here's the info on what I was thinking of buying. The prices are from www.sonicelectronix.com. A friend bought an alpine headunit from them and was pleased with service from them have you ever heard of the site they have good prices.
Head unit: Pioneer Premier FH-P800BT $274
61/2" doors front and backioneer TS-A1683R $59.99/set
Amp: Pioneer GM-D7500M which is a monoblock amp for $119.99 and I think with that amp I would go with the 2ohm Pioneer Premier TS-SW1201S2 $99 I changed the amp from what I originally asked about.

I just want a decent sounding system more sound quality not looking for pounding bass i'm 26 not 16. I could even go with components up front and decent rear door speakers and no sub just want a little rumble.

Pioneer Premier FH-P800BT
-You'll have to cut up the dash to make that deck fit, be ready.
Pioneer TS-A1683R
-Eugh. Save up some money and get the D series speakers. WORTH IT. (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Products/CarAudioVideo/Speakers/D-Series/TS-D1702R)

If you're looking for sound quality (and you actually know what sound quality sounds like), those A series speakers will be a let down.

Yeah why that head unit? it's going to require modding the dash, and for that price you could have a pretty decent single DIN.'

With those prices.... I could honestly steer you into nicer stuff. A good front set of components off a nice little 2 channel amp, single sub, small sealed box, small mono amp... things can be compact, great sounding, and affordable. And NOT Pioneer crap.

I want a double din I think single dins look horrible in an equinox. the crutchfield says it fits in the equinox. so what's the nicer stuff I'm open to some suggestions i would prefer to stay 800 for everything. my install skills are low but i'm willing to try but i want it done right

If you are willing to drop $800 on that stuff, I'm willing to bet $100 is a safe budget to guess on?

Let's assume $200 for a head unit with the right features, user friendly buttons and menu's, and damn good reliability.
(BTW nothing beats Crutchfield's customer service, and they give you all the install parts for free. Could save you more than you think)
HU: http://www.crutchfield.com/s_500CDA105/Alpine-CDA-105.html?tp=5684 That's $210 with everything you need, shipped to your door.
Ok now box for a sub?

The guy who does all the enclosure work for me is definitely my recommendation, and a simple sealed box for a single 10 or 12 inch sub should run $120 shipped or so. Will be built to the subs specs, carpeted, and shipped right to you for free. And I might be able to coax him into dropping a set of baffles in for free or cheap so you can mount some 6.5"'s up front!

So that's $330 spent so far? Sounds good...

Focus big time on the front components you chose. They play 90% of your damn music for crying out loud! lol. If high end quality and amazing sound is something you're interested in, I could get you into an absolutely gorgeous set of Rainbow SAC components for about $270.

So if my simple math is right, that's $600 accounted for and $400 of my $1K fabricated, estimated budget left? Sounds like it's amp and sub time.

Funny thing is, $100 could get you a sub that will do just fine. There are a ton out there that perform good, cost little, and sound good with the right amp and tuning capabilities. Here's an example: http://www.woofersetc.com/p7169/CTX104--Image-Dynamics-10"-CTX-4-ohm-Subwoofer.htm

Alright, only $300 left for amps, and that should be a cake walk.

Maybe you are willing to go the single amp route? One good solid 4 channel maybe?
If you can step that budget up, and play with the bigger dogs, I can most likely get you into this amp: http://www.woofersetc.com/p7098/iPaul-4300--Rainbow-iPaul-4-Channel-540-Watt-Amplifier.htm
For right around $400 and it would power a single sub and front comps beautifully.

BUT, if I stick to this $1K I came up with, and go the 2 cheaper amps route, here is what I would suggest:
http://www.woofersetc.com/p6655/PCX2350--Soundstream-2Channel-350W-Amplifier.htm
2 of those. one bridged to the sub, one running your fronts, 2 fairly compact, matching, half decent amps.

Honestly, step up with a budget in mind, and see what's out there for the higher end things. If you budget is higher than I am talking about, you could get into some VERY nice stuff from the higher end audio brands definitely.

in that case, the Pio you linked isn't a horrible deal if it has the features you want.

I'm thinking I need to just save up a little more. thanks for all your advise and help. now is there any way to have a decent sounding stereo with no sub?
Re: 2 or 4ohm sub?

There is, but in all honesty if you want the full production of sound below 60-80hz, it's going to be tough to do. A small sub and amp for it is something that really rounds off the bottom end and can be had cheap enough that I highly recommend going that route for a simple daily driver setup that isn't getting intricate.

I'm going to have to wait and save up some more cash I have sticker shock right now. Thanks for all your help. I need to go around to some stereo shops and hear some speakers.

depending on what your local shops have, that's a great idea! Listening helps a ton.

Can we talk about how rarely I see people say this?

Big respect, man. You'll do well in this.

Nothin wrong with building a stereo in pieces. Just make sure the pieces are good ones

agreed, just buy it piece by piece and buy quality so you only have to buy things once.
