2 channel for subs?
Wednesday, July 07, 2010 9:09 PM
So my friend just got a job at furture shop in car audio and after talking to some guy that has been installing and competing in SQ for 9 years, my friend yold me I was wrong about alot of stuff and blah blah blah...

Apparenty, super future shop install pro says that 99% of the time a single SVC sub or 2 DVC subs should be hooked up to a 2 channel instead of a mono amp. Apparently this is much better. He also said that its cheeper.

I also asked my friend to ask him about efficiency, because from what I have heard here and around, A/B class amps are much less efficiant. Future shob guy said that it doesnt really matter and efficiancy is pretty much just heat loss.

None of this seams right to me from what I have researched and asked about, but can some smart people here please go over this with me, because I want to be educated properly.

For subwoofers, mono amps are better. Why? Because they are designed to be used for subwoofers. They are typically stable at lower impedances, typically 2ohms, which is the typical impedance of your typical subwoofer. Many also have servo circuits designed to deal primarily with frequencies in the sub bass frequency band.

One situation where I needed to use a 2 channel amp to run a sub was when I had a dual 2 ohm sub and the choice of one brand of amp. The mono version of the amp put out it's maximum power at 2 ohms, while the 2 channel put out maximum power at 4 ohms. Since my wiring options (with the dual 2 ohm sub) were 1 ohm or 4 ohms, I went with the 2 channel.

Would I have been better off going with a different brand, mono amp? Yep. And that's what I'm running today.

Efficiency is a big deal. It's power in vs. power out. The more of the power in that you use to make power out, they easier the amp is on your alternator.

Never listen to your friend of this guy who claims to have been competing for years. He is VERY wrong.

very, very wrong. IMHO, stick with class A/B for front and class D for subs.......

keyword is FUTURE SHOP . . . Brad explained it very well and enough said in that department\

if he has been competing in sq for 9 years i highly doubt he would work for a @!#$ty place like that instead of a quality audio shop

Whats up people?

2 channel versus mono. pick the one that works best for your setup. him saing one is better then other is kinda dumb. same goes for class a/b class a/b is no where near as efficent as a class d. class a/b will give you a cleaner sound but if your just talking bass freqnecies, your not really going to hear a diffrence anyway. i still run class a/b for my subs but im a bit anal about my sound. he is right in the fact that it really doesnt matter as far as power output. a 100 watt class a/b put out the same power as a 100 watt class a/b the diffrence though is it will take more power from your alt/battery to push the a/b versus the class d. they guy likley sounds like a know it all who has been doing things the same way for the last 9 years and is stuck in his, this was better so i will assume it will always be better.

While I agree for the most part, there are some very good Class D amps out there. First ones that come to mind are the new PDX and JL slash. PDX damping factor is >500.

I've recently heard some horror stories of PDX amps actually being super noisy and finicky....

Last generation was awful. This years stuff supposedly fixed all those issues, says my rep (so take that as you will).

yeah, for the price though, I have better options. I'm not endorsed or running a shop with limited product availability though too. I understand shops have specific brands they sell, so they kinda gotta sell em.

Not gonna say they're not expensive

And I'm not going to say I would much prefer Rainbow iPaul's and a couple other "higher end" brands to the PDX amps
