Ecotec Supercharger Install Help
Wednesday, August 02, 2006 3:07 PM
I've been installing the GMPP Supercharger into my Cav for the past couple of days. I've run into a few problems. Snapped bolts and such, but I'm at a point where I really need some help.

The biggest issue is how to run the coolant hose from behind the left headlight up across the engine bay to the coolant resevoir. The directions say to modify a bracket and attach it to the front of the intake manifold. The pictures suck, so I don't have any idea what it's talking about. I went ahead and put the manifold on thinking I can run a different hose once everything is in place. That didn't work out quite as well as I had planned. I'm having belt clearance issues with not only the radiator hose, but the coolant hose that goes into/comes from the block. Here are some pictures:

This is the bracket used with the OEM hose, it is supposed to be mounted to the front of the intake manifold. I don't see how.

Here is a top view of the belt. The thick vertical hose in the middle of the picture rubs against the belt. It's a solid hose, so I don't see how to move it.

A little closer view of the belt rubbing hose.

My attitude towards the car right now.

Also, I don't know where to run the hoses near the throttle body. It says to run the supplied purge valve line from the purge valve to the throttle body adapter plate. There's no way to do this without pinching the hose. Is it okay if it's pinched.

If anybody has any advice or suggestions, please let me know. I want to get this project done and the car running.

the coolant tube kinda lays accross the intake , i managed to bolt 1 of the 2 i did to the intake

the hose belt clearence , you need to get a little creative with , twisting and cutting , make them happy , but you will need some good zip ties , and tie the 1 hose to the metal a/c line that is under it

the purger valve hose , im guessing you need to flip 180 , or you need to twist the end around , put it in the sun and twist it around slowly , it will turn , it was easy on 1 car and hard on the other car

ive done 2 installs

I am definetly looking forward to installing my heat exchanger setup.......NOT! lol.

I ended up doing this for the coolant hose.

As for the purge valve hose, I put it in front of my garage heater for about 10 minutes, that made it a lot easier to persuade.

Thanks for all your help, Eric.

Alex, I haven't even gotten to the intercooling part, haha. That's the agenda for tomorrow.

Intercooling

Does it matter which direction the Dexcool goes through the intercooler?

I have the Reservoir from the Cobalt SS, I can see the use for two of the hose ports, but what about the third? Block it off?

When putting in the Dexcool, I assume I keep pouring it into the reservoir until the heat exchanger is filled and I top off the reservoir?

-Thanks

The plus part for you is that you are installing your heat exchanger setup as you install your supercharger, the dealership installed my supercharger which means I don't have a heat exchanger installed which also means I get the joy of doing it myself and by the sounds of things, it is a whole lot of fun, lol. Oh well, I still need to buy the parts but new tires are coming first. Good luck with the install.

Wow man, how much did you end up paying for the installation part of it?

Yeah, the supercharger was a blast.....

She's almost done, I just have to connect one hose from the coffee can looking thing above the throttle body. I can't figure out where it goes.
My guess is that it connects to the throttle body adapter. Can somebody confirm this?

The belt was a bish.

Did you get the gauge bezel yet, Alex?

If I knew what you meant by coffee can loooking thing i'd try to help you so i'll post a pic of my setup and then you just outline what you're talking about if its in the picture.

As for the guage bezel, no not yet, it should be here tomorrow, although i'm leaving town tomorrow aswell so i'm hoping it will arrive before i leave so that I dont get charged anything extra for them to hold it or even worse for them to send it back god forbid.

Here's the first picture, I highlighted the path of the bottom hose to show you where it goes, the top hose is kinda obvious: **keep in mind the hoses dont have to go the same route that mine do, you may find something better**

Here's a close up of what the bottom hose "hooks" up to:

Hopefully the pics worked. If thats not the part you were asking for then sorry.

I have more pics to possibily help solve the problem, i'm sorry bout the poor quality, its because they are too close probably but I think they get the point across, here they are:

#1: In the small hole thats highlighted red in the pictured below, theres a screw, you access from the side when the battery is out, thats where you need to attach the wire to,

#2:

Hope it helps and like I said, sorry bout the quality.

sounds like you should have taken it to a shop man, too many things can go wrong, good luck though

Its just the little things that stump ya, but in the end its the little things that matter.

Yeah, you're not kidding about the little things.

I got it fixed, then came and read this thread.
So you were right.

Boosted, I thought about taking it to a shop, but this is something I wanted to do myself.
It's been rough, but definately worth it.

yeah i did mine myself along with my dad, went together perfectly in about 4 hours, so is it up and running good yet?

I just started it, she fired right up, I revved it a little just to hear the supercharger, it is incredible, I can't wait to actually drive it.

The black smoke pouring out of the exhaust pipes is also great. Nothing like having gaseous unburnt fuel filling your alveoli.

I just want to get it intercooled and get my gauges installed.

I'm debating on having a shop do the gauge installations. The boost one I feel comfortable with, but I don't know about the Wideband. Thoughts?

The guages shouldn't be too hard but let me know how the install of the heat exchanger setup goes just so i know what its like for when I do it, lol.

97cavie, thanks so much for your help man. It's really appreciated.

Alex, you too, your pictures helped a lot and I appreciate you responding in not 1, but 2 posts.

SunfighterGT got a bunch of my "oh crap, what do I do now!?" IMs. Thanks for your help too.

I talked to Shifted a couple times via AIM, thanks man.

Phlatcav, you inspired me.

If there's anybody I've forgotten to thank....thank you. I've spent a lot of time in this forum reading and trying to learn things. Most of you have been a tremendous help responding to my ignorant posts and such.

What pictures are you talking about, mine or Alex's?
