I was wondering if anyone knew where to get a thicker headgasket to reduce some compression and also some sturdier internal components for the 2.2 OHV engine. im looking to turbo the car over the course of the winter with a t3/t4 hybrid, i want to use an intercooling system also, will this require a front spoiler? is it possible to setup the turbo so it only boosts with a manual control? i don't want it boosting if im just cruising on the freeway at mid-high RPMs. also what kind of injectors should i use? where would i get a good variable flow fuel pump/controler? i have the 3 speed auto tranny, i would like to put a 5 speed in though, are there better manual trannies to use other than j body ones? (6spd?) i don't want to do this the wrong way and mess something up that i din't foresee. i was thinking about getting a eco tech engine or the 2.4 for this but i decided it would be more unique to beef up the crappier engine. will i need to rebuild and beef up the bottom end? how many ponies could i expect from this? how much boost are you guys running on this engine?

I'd like to address your questions in order
1)If you're going to be 'beefing' up the engine's internals, using a thicker headgasket to lower the compression is a BAD idea (yes, it will actually have a negative effect on the performance of your engine). Use a stock thickness headgasket if you want to reuse your stock pushrods. Use a thinner headgasket if you want more performance and a better running engine. Either way, compression should be lowered by using a larger dish on the pistons.
2) An intercooler does not need a lip spoiler, that big hole in the front of your bumper will do fine
3) In order to effectively "turn off" the boost at higher RPM, you would need to open the wastegate, this could be done a number of ways, but the bottom line is that you won't be in boost if the pedal isn't to the metal (aka, easy on the throttle and you can stay out).
4) Since you have a 97, you have the crappy injectors. Search for "top-feed conversion" for more info.
5) I'm not really sure why you would want a variable fuel pump, maybe you're referring to a fuel pressure riser? These are becoming obsolete in jbodies as we now have HPTuners for fuel control (check the tuning forum for more info)
6) The 3spd is the strongest tranny offered in the 3rd gen Jbody, a 5-speed is a downgrade lol. As far as swapping a tranny on to your motor that was used elsewhere? I haven't heard of such a thing, but you might have more luck in the transmission forum
7) As far as what internals and how much power, that's not possible to answer. However, if you tell us your power goal or monetary limit and mechanical/fabrication abilities, we can tell you what to get or how much power is possible
