Thats right Im stuck on deciding what turbo will best fit my engine.. My mods are in my registry..
What I want:
Realiability with regular street driving at 10 psi with the ability to turn up the boost on the track..
I want a turbo that will spool around 3-3500k
At LEAST 300whp, if I can get more then so be it.
What I don't want:
Lag until 4-4500k!(I heard from a non J owner that the GT3071R will spool right there) I dont want that.
As soon as I hit the gas I dont want to be left behind lol.
Im an auto.. My boy with a GT28RS on his 1.8t suggested the GT28 because he said I will have crazy lag with the GT30. I like his setup on his car.. He's pushing 380whp with the GT28.
Im ordering the turbo on Monday.. I will be dynotuned with HPTuners and the works will be done to my car as far as tuning.
This car will see more street time than track time if that helps on figuring out which turbo best suits me.
Bottom line, I guess what im getting at is that I dont want to pay for the GT30 and not get full use out off the turbo because of where it spools at. And I know each car is different on how a turbo spools up. I just need help from fellow J owners who are experience with our cars.
Thanks for any help, yes im confused lol

A GT30R should spool by 3-3500k, the GT28RS will probably spool around 2500-3k. The spool times your friend is quoting you are probably accurate for his motor (the 1.8) but a 2.4 has a good amount of dispalcement over his.

Yea the Gt28rs is a little too samll for you. I believe they are also a T25 flange, unless you get it with a T3. GT30R would be my choice.
Yea the GT28RS is a common choice for the 1.8t guys, but for an engine with that much more displacement you should be fine with the 30.
you will be happy as hell with the gt30. also consider the fact that you have an auto. an auto works wonders for lag

You can get the GT28RS with a T3 turbine flange.
If i were aiming to make a a little over 300whp and retain the stock rev limit, the GT28RS with a .82 a/r turbine would be my turbo of choice.

gt30r will spool around 3k-3500 like jeremy already said. gt28 is a bit small and will beut of breath right around 300whp. go for the 30r
Blew it up, build numbers coming soon
GO WITH THE GT30.........
i wanted one soo bad but couldnt come up with the extra 400 bucks so i went with the T3/T4. but no worries, im sure ill upgrade in the near future....good luck man and keep us updated
Just in case you guys didn't know, you can get regular Garrett turbos like their T3/TO4E's upgraded with GT dual ball bearing center sections now.

I did not know that skilz, I have a t3/t04e which I plan to run as my initial turbo for next season. An upgraded bb center would be great, where can I find these?

well I know its not listed but I'd opt for the t3 super 60 but, in your case I'd go with the GT30
**changes are here**
I found a place that has a sale going on for the GT28RS with a .82 a/r and T3 flange for $900, without actuator. i'm really looking into this but i'm thinking, after reading this thread, about going with the 30. I'm only aiming for 300whp since it's a daily driver.
build i'm in the middle of :
-086 head
-95 intake, HO exhaust cams
-9:1 Weisco (.020" overbore)
-Eagle H-beam rods
-2.3 oil pump conversion
-HO intake mani
-custom 086 turbo mani
-3" turbo back
-Port n Polish/Port match
-Clutch still undesided, but possibly centerforce dual friction or a SPEC stage 3 or 4 equivilant....just not spec, i've heard way to many horror stories.
-Flywheel is also undesided, but for sure not Fidanza. Too many problems. Paul's (NA MADNESS) is a good example and he's not even using boost.
I think for what you want... go with the GT3071R... thats a properly size turbo for your engine size and the power you want to make... from what i can see you will be right in the center of the turbo map at about 9.5psi... or very close to which is what you want..
The First Twin Charged jbody

I've seen 3071R's on 1.8T's making over 200 whp by the time 4500 rpm comes around. Trust me, thats a plenty quick enough spooling turbo. It is, however, much more than you need for your 300whp goal, which a 28rs will be just fine for, and also less expensive than the 3071. If I ever get to that point with mine it'll probably be a 3071 because spool vs. ultimate power capability is a really good ratio. The 3071r can make up to 430whp depending on tune and setup. I can't really recall the highest numbers I've seen from a 28rs but I really can't remember seeing much over 350.
