hey man i was looking through the forum and saw this convo and thought i would just give my thoughts about it. i can see that your eager to turbocharge your j and i love it because more and more are starting to be seen now days. However, i also just want to make sure your aware of the significant amount of work and research that goes into turbocharging a j-body the correct way. As i read your post i realized that your new to all of this information. Now im not saying that you are not capable of doing it because anyone can if they apply themselves the right way. In my opinion the best way to prepare for this is to read read read and listen to others who have accomplished what you hope to. I see so many members on here that want a turbocharged j but often do it the wrong way and end up wasting ALOT of time and money. Making our cars efficient and powerful by turbocharging is not the easiest modification. To start, you need to think about your goals with the project. There are so many guys who just want to see, hear, and feel a turbo under the hood that do it any way possible which usualy ends up in alot of money spent and poor performace. Now im not gunna nag your ear off about this stuff anymore so i will just give you a list of parts that can get you started. These are the main things your going to need:
Turbo- now if your gunna turbo your car buy a namebrand turbo. Even if you find a turbo on ebay that claims to be namebrand such as Garrett or Turbonetics, i have seen guys sell turbos on there with namebrand housings "covers, etc." that have junk internals in them. Just buy your turbo from a registered dealer "your gunna pay anywhere up to 800 bucks for a journal bearing, and up to 1300 for a ball bearing.
Manifold-Another area where you dont want ot go cheap. Since no one makes a reasonably priced header for j's, get a log. Dont forget about what you need for a wastegate. Interaly gated turbos are very common and perform just fine for the boost levels your going to be running and are easier/cheaper to deal with.
Oil Supply- Use steel braided. 3 AN works fine for feed, and i would use 1/2" or 3/4" for return.
Intercooler/Charge Pipes: Be sure to use aluminized or pure aluminum tubing for your charge pipes. As for your intercooler, size is not everything and bigger looks cool but is not always better. Try to use a "Bar/Plate" design intercooler since they flow better and cool better.
Blow Off Valve: Again, use a namebrand valve. Your blow off valve is a major role player in turbo life and spooling times.
Fuel Injectors: SIZE YOUR INJECTORS SPECIFICALLY FOR YOUR APPLICATION. You see so many guys just throw in the ones they hear should work. This isnt a good idea, contact RC Engineering or use their sizing chart on their website and get NEW injectors that are sized to fit your needs.
Engine Management: This is gunna be the most expensive part. Whatever you do, try to stay away from piggy back systems if at all possible. If your car is a 97 or newer, I strongy recommend HPtuners because of the price. You will make tons more powerful and efficient setup if you are able to adjust the engines timing, fuel, etc. Again, these upgrades arent cheap but are a MUST if you plan on doing it correctly.
This is a very very brief overview but covers the major parts. like i said bro im not trying to come off as a dick. I just wanna make sure you understand the seriousness of the work that goes into boosting a j. Good luck with the project!!
I was lookin at HP Tuners website. What exactly is it? Is a module to replace your PCM that you can modify with a computer, or is it just a computer program that is able to modify the PCM? It looks complicated, Would it be possible for someone to learn how to use it by trial and error, or is it more complicated than that. Also how much would one for a Gen 3 cost me?
