no intercooler question

If i bought a turbo, manifold, piping, and downpipe could i just run the turbo strait from the manifold back to the throttle body using intercooler tubing. Eventually, i will get a intervcooler i just dont have the funds right now. could that work?

Yes, and no. It'll work, but the temprature of the air charge is greater without the i.c. Not exactly sure on the temp difference, but from what I understand it's significant. You will loose some performance, but you'll be boosted. Short answer, yes you can turbo your car without the i.c., not a real good idea though.

if your only pushing smaller boost numbers it wont hurt any thing id say if your only doing like 5-6psi you will be more then fine with out one

The First Twin Charged jbody
blue car (R.I.P) - 240whp @7psi..
silver car - 305whp 315lbs.tq @15psi (91 Octane) or 420whp & 425lbs.TQ @20psi (94 octane+Alcohol Injection)
All dynos run on a Mustang dyno

how do you adjust how much boost you will run? i only want to run a few pounds, no more than 6. where would the BOV go?

You'll need a wastegate, which will give a certain amount of ability to adjust your pressure. A boost controller will let you do the rest.

BOV will go where the BOV usually goes - between the compressor & the throttle body.

so basically the only parts i need is the turbo, manifold, intercooler tubing, BOV, boost controller, and waste gate? last question, can you make your own downpipe using exhaust pipes or do you have to buy a pre-built one?

if you can find a prebuilt one for your car/turbo/manifold/wastegate set-up.. then that should answer your question

Vibrant Performance has a section of mandrel bent stainless that you can pick up, that's what I did mine with. You just have to know how to weld or know someone who is patient enough to go through all the crap that making a custom downpipe involves, you know tack the pipe if it doesn't fit, grind the tacks and try again, I think mine took about 2 hours to make. Vibrant also has all of your needs for making your own boost piping, you just have to have an imagination and some knowledge about air flow. Use as few 90 degree bends as possible, there are times when you just can't get away from them. I think when all was said and done I pieced my turbo kit together for about $2000, my turbo only cost me $500, I got the Turbonetics wastegate and B.O.V., those 2 alone were about $500, and the rest is Vibrant piping and a spearco i.c. that I picked up used for about $100, ebay turbo manifold for $150 I think, some oil fittings and a few other things, if you check the sticky on parts needed for a turbo kit it tells you pretty much everything you need, it's just up to you on where you get it.

hes going to need to do something with his fuel, probably larger injectors or a fmu dont forget that and then colder spark plugs

last question i swear.... tis is a newb question but where does the boost controller go? where do you hook it up and stuff? and what does a wastegate do?

I am honestly a little scared from reading your posts so far, I am not insulting you, I just fear the life of your engine. You can boost without an intercooler, but I swear you will be 10x better off if you wait the extra couple months and buy an EBAY or JRC intercooler ($100-$200) and some piping 2.0"-2.5" mandrell off ebay are super cheap, so for an extra 200-300 you can intercool and this changes a couple things... 1)colder denser air charge into your engine 2)less pressure for same HP gains 3)safe gaurd to ensure reliabilty... I know sometimes when in a pinch it "works" to go non-intercooled, but $300 now or $700, plus engine swap then $300 to intercool later, is way more money.

The wastegate is usually set on the turbine housing (internal gate), you can also get external wastegates (mount on the turbo manifold), if you are looking for a pretty good setup that will have less pieces and parts the internal will be everything you want and more. They work in conjunction with a vacumm/pressure actuator that relieves exhaust pressure when your intake hits a certain value, so most times a a 6-8psi actuator is used and you can adjust UP ONLY with a boost controller.. so you do not need a boost controller unless you want MORE pressure.

As for the BOV, that goes between your turbo and the throttle body.. some people say before the intercooler, some say after... either way, it prevents turbo damage by "blowing off" excess pressure in the tubes when the throttle body closes and all the extra air the turbo is pushing needs some place to go.

In your list of parts you have nothing to control fuel, or spark. For a low pressure setup it is common to only control fuel, the easiest/cheapest way to do this is by using a FMU (search begi 2025 FMU approx $125-$175 used) and they simple raise your fuel pressure with boost.. so every extra pound of intake pressure you gain 6-12psi of fuel pressure.... 6-12 you ask?? yes this must be set with a wideband o2 sensor.. now you can either buy one (AEM EUGO, WB o2, etc, ebay $200-$250) or when you dyno tune your car pay the extra 20 bucks to have the shops installed and have them tune it.

so you want to turbo your list has the "major compents" to make pressure, now lets add the "reliability" and "power adders" and you will have a great setup you really enjoy.

Manifold -- 200 (happythoughts ebay)
turbo --- 300-500 (down2turbo ebay)
oil lines --- 50-100 (ebay T3 kits)
intercooler setup ---200-300 (ebay or JRC)
downpipe --- 150-200 (any exhaust shop)
misc vacumm line and one way valve for map sensor (50)
BOV -- $100-150

you have a 2001 with 2.4?? you can use

www.hptuners.com or begi 2025 for fuel

HPT will control - REV limiter, spark, fuel, speed limiter, anything else you want --- $650

---OR---

FMU (begi) --- just fuel --- $150-175

HP Tuners | Garrett T3/T04B | 2.5" Charge Pipes | 2.5" Downpipe | 650 Injectors | HO Manifold | Addco front/rear | Motor Mounts | HKS SSQV | Spec stage 3 | AEM UEGO Wideband | Team Green LSD | FMIC | 2.3 cams | 2.3 oil pump swap | 280WHP | Now ECOTECED

Sorry forgot about the fuel mods, but I did say check the sticky just in case I did forget anything. You can also use hp tuners for the eco's as well.
