Well, I got the s/c on and working for about 3 hours. It ran pretty damn good. Next day, I took it out and it started making this horrid sound that you can hear in the video. Thought it was the timing chain slapping due to a bad tensioner...nope. Then I thought maybe a bad lifter since I didn't replace them....nope. Not sure now what the f@#$ it is. I got the motor half ripped apart and can't find a damn thing wrong. Gonna drop the oil pan later this week and look around it there. It doesn't sound like a spun bearing and it didn't seem to get any worse, but it is still in the back of my mind. And only 1800 miles on the motor :-( Oh yeah, oil pressure is good too and didn't notice anything weird. Take a listen to the vid and tell me what you guys think. Sorry for the vid being so big. I should have turned the resolution down on my camera a bit. Anyway, on with the linky.

if you dont have access to a stethescope (spelled wrong i think), get a long wooden pole and touch it to various parts of the motor to try and locate where the sound comes from. wait i read it again and you say its around being pulled apart, i would check rods. i wish you the best of luck, sorry to hear about another engine.
Wow, not even sure what it could be.. Doesnt sound as bad as mine though when my timing jumped.. Good luck with it.

You can also use a long screw driver and put the end of it on your ear and touch the end to the block and see where its at.
That would mean I would have to reassemble the motor. It's already half torn apart.... I guess I'm going to pull the oil pan tonight after work and see what I can find. If it were a rod bearing, I would think it would make the noise all the time, even when its idling. That's what it did when I spun my last bearing. It was loud all the time and had a much "knockier" sound. This doesn't make noise at idle and seems more "tinny" to me...I dunno.

sometimes bearings dont make noises all the time, i remember a customer of my dad's with a 4.3 vortec blazer, it would only knock after it warmed up and had load on the engine...any other time it was fine.
Check the stupid plastic coupler in the SC snout... Those holes distort and make a sound like that.

Good call. Makes sense now that you say it. Wish i thought about that when i talked to Luke on the phone last night.

Where is the coupler? Not sure I know what you are talking about....

I may have missed it, but how many miles are on the motor?
knock knock knock when you rev it like that... REALLY sounds like a rod bearing to me.

yes, i had that hapen on my first charger, you can get them on ebay for cheep, i would rebuild it if i where you...
just listened to it, take the belt off, and turn the pulley by hand ( the charger one, ) feel if in "hits" one way then the other, like a "snap" feel to it.

Spun the pulley, felt normal. I couldn't feel anything either way.

Sounds like the timing chain is rubbing somewhere...to me at least.
Sounds like a rod knock to me.When mine started knocking it would knock when under load, then it started knocking it idle.

rod knock FTW...or FTL in this case
sounds like you have a screw driver or a tool lodged somewhere in the red fan make sure no tools in the engine after that i would check my rods,
i've had both problems in the past, and make sure your belts and timing chain is not hitting anything
You take a women and X her by PSI devide the legs and you can then juice the car......LOL
... if rod Knock is the case. thats what? 4 LD9' now?

I don't know how it could be a rod bearing....The motor had brand new rods, new bearings, and only has 1,800 miles on it. Plus it has the 2.3L oil pump swap, and according to my gauge, oil pressure has been fine, no problems with oil pressure whatsoever. I was seeing 25-30 psi at idle and 40-55 psi at 3K. I am going to pull the oil pan tonight and see what I can see.

Good oil pressure or not, one of the end cap bolts could of came loose on your rod or something unfortunately. Never know.. Hope ya figure it out.

I suppose that COULD be a collapsed lifter.... but it is a deep noise, and your coupler is fine, by what you said............ drop the pan, and grab your rods, see if any "wiggle" .............
LOL tom.....
What the crank under cut? And they didn’t tell ya?

Good oil pressure does not mean you can't spin a rod bearing. The issue is not oil pressure but actually oil supply. Also as stated something could have come loose. I have seen many 2.4's with rod bearings bad each one sounded a little differe. The very first one sounded great at idle and did not make a noise until you got to a steady cruising speed. YOu could go WOT with it and it sounded normal, but at cruising it had a noise. Had many people look at it everyone stated it is not a rod bearing, but maybe a wrist pin. We put in new timing chain guides, pulled the oil pan no signs of a rod bearing, cut open the oil filter no signs. I finally decided to pull the motor once it was opened up you coul see it. Drove it for 2 weeks like that beating on it and we still just polished the crank.
