2.2L 3 Speeds, Turbos, and Opinions.
Wednesday, January 16, 2008 4:34 PM
Hi. I'm Chris. I drive a '96 3 speed 2.2L coupe. And it's slow.

Very slow.

I don't know for sure how many turbo 2.2 3 speeds are out there, but I'm hoping for at least a few to chime in here.

First off, I'm not asking for anyone to tell me what turbo to use, so, relax!

--

What I am wondering, is if any of you turbo 3 speeds have any regrets on going with a small turbo for lower end power, or a larger turbo for power up there high? Maybe someone found a sweet spot in between?

I haven't hooked up a tachometer yet to see what the RPMs look like at various speeds in each gears, but it seems like most city driving is in second, and freeway driving is either suicidally high in second (and still not going anywhere hehe) or, fairly low in third. I'm thinking I'm not so concerned with power right off the line, mostly because it is FWD, and tires are expensive. Also, it really seems like the only time spent in low (off the line) range of the powerband seems to be off traffic lights, and I don't really feel the need for boost in traffic anyways.

So, hopefully this can get to the right people, anyone with a preference really, on what they like their turbo 3 speeds' powerband to feel like, any insights, suggestions, regrets, or "If I could do it all over..."s would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I enjoyed the 60-trim T3 (.63 a/r exh) I had, it fit the powerband well, and will be going back on. Add a higher stall TC to your "to buy list" to make it more fun.

For both of you, are you using these cars as your daily? When do each of your setups hit WOT (or in otherwords, when do you hit 0 vacuum?) Speeds in gears would be better, as I have yet to install a tach. Hard acceleration of course!

I don't have a 3spd, but have built enough of these cars that I can honestly say you would be happy with a T3 Super 60...... Also, a .48 a/r hotside would be ideal if you don't plan on going crazy with the boost....

I ran a 3 speed but I used a turbo off an SVO which is a pretty large T3 60 trim. But I loved it, gave me a little room to be out of boost but take a straight jab at the throttle and the turbo would kick you back into the seat. Trust me once you go boost nothing else is adequate.

i will soon be joining all those turbo 3-speeds out there, i'll be running a t25/t28 turbo tho.

no more cavy...now 240 =]

I see a cool-air intake
It's got a NOS-fogger system and a T-4 turbo
I see an A.I.C. controller
It has direct port nitrous injection
Yeah, a stand-alone fuel management system
...Not a bad way to spend $10,000

to answer your question: no, I dont' use this as a daily driver, as a matter of fact its lucky to see 3K a year if that. but when you see "zero" vacuum/boost is usually when your just driving it normally (not getting on it hard at all) when you start to see boost is when you sorta get into it (depending on where you have your boost controller set at.) If you build/tune it right you can use this as a daily driver.. I don't see why not.

My wife's car isn't an auto, but after adding the T25 to the 2.2 we drove it for 2 years daily. I took it off the road in September of '06 due to rust and I am still disappointed that it's about 18k miles short of 300k. It's parked outside my barn waiting to be stripped. Still starts and drives, it's just... rusty-er. Tuning and quality work are the keys to long life with a project like this (and no rust).

3 speed should be the strongest tranny available. Add a shift correction kit and red eagle rebuild if you're weary.

Well, do you know how to use the search function? We do have a transmission forum...
Good thread

ANY THOUGHTS??? YES!!! BUY A F#$%ING HEARING AID YOU DEAF SOMEBEECH!

A stock 125 can be blown up with a couple of good holeshots. A built 125 can generally handle the power you're looking to build. What you really want to do is think about how much torque you'll be producing.
