Is this blow by?
Wednesday, January 23, 2008 11:42 AM
i hope this is the right thread since my boost is causing this.

I have oil on all 4 intake ports of my head.. I noticed it after I took my manifold off so I can drop my tranny.. Oil was running off the flange of the manifold as well.. I have a poor mans catch can hooked up to my oil thing on the front of my 2.4 block.. So how does oil get into my manifold like that, espcially this much?

No wonder why im blowing white smoke upon start up.. Now I dont mind some oil because I know that will happen, but how can I prevent THIS much oil from coming out of my intake manifold into my head?

bad headgasket my friend...White smoke is usually antifreeze and if its just at start up then it might just be a small leak.

I had a Home Depot catch can that filled up and my car started blowing white smoke out the yin yang. I pulled it off and the car hasn't smoked since then. If the catch can isn't full you have problems, but if it is pull it off and see if you have the same issues.

The head gasket only has 1900 miles on it and it hasnt even been drivin hard, only for tuning it has.

But IM not sure if their is a tint of blue smoke, I really cant tell.. Also my catch can isn't full
This didnt start until after I put the head back on the car at 1500 miles, after my timing jumped.. This sucks.. I'll have to wait until I put the tranny back in before I can start the car again.

Also im still confused on why all the oil on my intake ports.. I believe that is the real reason its smoking.

have you removed any intercooler piping? Curious if there is oil in them as well.. I'm guessing if there is that the seals on your turbo are bad. thats the same thing that happened to me... started smoking a bit and then more and more. the seals had gone out on the turbo and was blowing oil threw my intercooler piping into the intake.

I wanna go fast!!

well it all really depends on the color of the smoke...usually..blueish>oil, white>coolant, blackish>fuel...

what about oil getting past the valve seals and sitting on top of the valve overnight and then burning off when started the next day

when the engine gets warmed up the valves will expand with the engine heat and have a tighter seal ....

just an idea

yup..that is true..if its blue smoke. But your car can also seep a little coolant overnight as well. JUst all really depends on the color of the smoke ...

Thanks for the ideas guys.. Here is a pic to see exactly what i seen when i took my intake off.. I see how the oil could sit on the valves then burn off upon startup... Because when i drive the car and get on it, there is no smoke.. Weird huh.

Also, yes ive taken off my intercoolling piping and there is no trace of oil...

Compression Check it first or Leak down Test it first and then get back with details to move forward. Their could be so many determining factors.

My first thought when I read the question was valve stem seals are leaking threw. If the intake track is oily between the head and catch can breather line inlet to the intake track then I would say your catch is bleeding over. If it is valve seals......... running a compression test will show normal and so will the leak down test. A LITTLE oil in there is pretty normal but that looks excessive. Run some basic tests to help point you in the right direction. Typically after a repair has been made and a new issue comes about 9 times out of 10 something IS wrong or WENT wrong with what was just repaired or associated with the repair. Good luck

David, Check your oil air separator. Mine was FULL of @!#$, and was smoking white out the back. Its easy to get to now that the intake is off.

Chris- thats just the color of the gasket now that the oil is right there on it, i use dexcool anyway.

K vega- Thanks man, ill try that.

California- Thanks for the info, this sucks those are brand new valve stems and seals on there.

Mike will do.

All this will have to wait until I drop the tranny and get that back in the car.. This sucks.

Thats right Ld9's do have that right underneath the intake manifold and they do tend to fill up.

What are you using for a breather on the head? Stock or with most intakes, you can have a tube that goes directly into the intake. As long as you don't have that while boosted..

I dunno just a thought.

Re: Is this blow by?

^^ I see what you saying, but on the 2.4'S we have that oil air separator on the front of the blocks that does the breathing.

I just checked the oil\air separator and 3 of the bolts were loose, that would probably explain the oil down the front of the block and the oil pan.. But its clean on the inside, no build up at all..
