Close To Finishing Boost, Few Questions...
Wednesday, April 02, 2008 8:00 PM
Im about to wrap up the system. what is everyone doing for the IAT sensor? extending the wires and putting it in the intake off the turbo? also what plugs should i run with 9 psi and at what gap? i have read many different posts and no body seems to give a definite answer. i also called ATP and asked if my turbo needed an oil restrictor, the lady told me, well run it without one and if you see oil coming out, add one in.... well duh... but i would rather not find out that way if i can help it. its a t3/t4 57 trim with .63 a/r. i had a few more questions but cant think of them at the time. your help is appreciated, thanks a ton.

run a restrictor, I did...

iat - I left mine out in the way of wind....

and plugs? Suncavi posted the correct ones but I cannot remember which ones they are. I used srt4 plugs with no issue, let me see if I can dig up the number suncavi used

sweet thanks, and btw Ecotec if you didnt check my reg. any idea what our oil pressure is? thats what she said bases my turbo off of needing a restrictor, she said if i run one, i could starve the turbo of oil, if i dont, i could flood it and leak some til i get a restrictor, she sounded knowledgeable and gave me the # for the one i would use but im not sure. id like to try to get it worked out ahead of time and thanks for the plug numbers, thats one ive read is good but ive never got a decent answer. as for the IAT, the ONLY think im worried about is its true reading, im going to have to have the filter down by the firewall behind the motor on a 90 right off the turbo but maybe 6-12" down. would i be better to extend it to get TRUE IAT temps or just hide it in the engine bay and have it exposed to air?

not a problem... my oil pressure when I started my car jumped to 80 and slowly came down, once under operating temp it stayed around 20 and got till about 35 under full boost at high rpm. I have a very similiar style turbo and say run the restrictor... As far as the iat I ran it in the open air only to get a cooler reading.

the woman was saying if i was reading about 40 psi i should run a restrictor, you have a link to the one you have? they told me to run the one atp-022 from atp for mine. i just dont want to starve it of oil is all. and as for the IAT, i know thats why most do it but not sure if it will mess up my tune by having the false temp reading.

don't even bother entending the wires for the IAT, drill and tap the charge pipe and get a threaded Camaro IAT (part number and thread pitch listed in another thread, search for i in boost forum) thats way your getting the true IATs at the TB

that works to. Something I was going to do, but never got around too.

Oil restrictor is the same one I ran that she said

Yeah, Darkstar's method is the RIGHT way to do it for sure. I'll probably go that method this season as well. Last year I put the IAT in the tube leading to the compressor, behind the filter.

Camero IAT sensor, part number SU107 from WELLS.. I got it at Autozone. Run the wire to your charge pipe, about 6-8 inches away from your TB.

Not to sound rude but you're taking advice from the lady that answers the phone? Have you asked her if she's even qualified to give advice / technical information about the products? I doubt it.

Run a restrictor, it's cheap insurance. Your car sees over 40 psi at startup for a few mins that'll blow seals within a few weeks esp if they are weak. You install it after the pressure sender but before the line that heads to the turbo. You do not put it on the turbo end.

As for the IAT... Camaro IAT and a bung welded in is the only proper way to get an IAT reading, installed just before the TB just as the stock one is.

Good luck Vince, lemme know if you have any more Q's.

yes he did take advise from a lady on re phone... And then came here to verify if what he heard is right or not. What's the problem?

Darkstars - I'm more questioning if he asked her whether she's qualified or has the technical experience go give such advice over the phone.

How many companies do you call where the secretary goes "So and So isn't available, but can I help you?".... not unless you have direct experience with turbos and turbo installations or are fully qualified.

My own company does the same thing, and it irks me when the secretary gives advice about our products when she doesn't know squat about them. That's all I'm saying here... relax.

Vincent... not sure. I think an oxygen sensor bung works, check to see if you can find an aluminum one and what the threading is... I believe they are the same. I may be wrong.

As for the comment about the chick, Vince filled me in on MSN and told me she's actually one of the tech people. I misunderstood his original post.

Anywho back on topic!

This is what i did for mine.
the charge pipe that goes into the TB weld and o2 sensor bung and run this:
http://www.diyautotune.com/catalog/open-element-sensor-with-pigtail-p-62.html
It will screw right in and also plug into your stock harness, and you will get acurate IAT readings.

Vince, why are you powdercoating the DP? I think that would burn off. Ceramic Coat that bitch.

i called my pc guy before i sent it to him and asked him about it. he said its good too 1500 and the coating has seen upwards of 1700 before he said with no problems, the surface will be porous just like my manifold and turbo are and it will match perfectly, he gave me the guarantee that it wont burn off or he will fix it for free. so why not? im not wrapping this no matter what.

and thanks for the aluminum links guys, i appreciate it.

Anyone have any insight on a turbo timer? i need a basic simple one, thats all i need it to do is run the car for a few minutes when i get out. thats it. dont need it to be a boost controller, dont need it to have all the special bells and whistles. all i want is one that hooks up, runs the car for a few minutes and that can also be bypassed if i dont want it to run after i shut it off. anyone have any links or info one or know of a decent one that i can pick up? let me know if you could, thanks, im really close to starting this thing
