hey man, i just want to say i tossed around the differences for the last year. I was trying to decide which stand alone or piggy back would be best. I want you to know that you need to figure out your needs and if you can afford going to a full stand alone and your needs are going to justify that cost then do it. I personally ended up going Hp-tuners. I saved well over $2,000 and the capabilities are amazing with HPT.

For all of you who chimed in to my posting thanks for echoing the constant chant that led me to just go HPT. I was stubborn but i made the right choice!

A full MS-II standalone will either cost you a little less than HPT or a little more (depending on whether you can solder or not). HPT and MS-II are both good choices for tuning, but Megasquirt is by far the superior choice for tuning a turbocharged engine. I'm pretty sure you can't use a piggyback to tune the 04-05 J-body pcms as the computer will keep cutting fuel to sustain a 14.7:1 AFR when not in Power Enrichment...which means if you are in boost at part throttle, say goodbye to your engine. Either get HPT or a standalone if you want to tune.

The 04-05 PCM will sustain 14.7 no matter what, there is no PE mode.

The other advantage to MS-II is if you're so inclined and have the motor built to do so, you can rev to 14,000rpm and actually have tuning abilities for the last 7000rpm.

How much money do you want to spend? Are you looking in using this as a street car on or a street/strip car? What capabilities do you want?

HPT doesn't have the abaility to tune into the higher RPM's?

^ No, the tables only go up to around 7000 RPM, even though you can make the car rev all the way up to 10,000 RPM.

What kind of power do you want to make, and what is the maximum power you want to make? I found a lot of engine management systems that are stand alone but still not very expensive. Haltech will be your cheapest, and then you have options from there. there is link, big stuff 3, accel dfi, FAST XFI, SDS, Pectel, Micro Tech, TEC3 and then the king of all MOTEC. These are full stand alones, and will allow more tuning to be done. These systems listed are tunable to even over 11000 RPMS, proven in rotary set-ups. If you are building a 300-400HP car i wouldn't worry about one of these systems, HPT or MSII will be fine. Over 400HP tuning is critical even though many say it is not needed. It is possible to gain upwards of 50HP with tuning alone, but 50HP won't make up for the safety that these stand alones can offer.

Correction, HPT can make the car rev up to about 8192 RPM.
